What do you know about poverty?
Take the test here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4694945.stm
I didn't do very well...I only got two right! Some of the answers are extremely surprising.
One answer I did get right, becuase I picked the most necessary item, was the question about what is NOT considered a necessity for children A) Attending Weddings & Funerals B) A Dictionary C) A Microwave Oven. Apparently going to a wedding is more important than an oven!
See how you do.

I got 5 out of 10 (and I really couldn't care less about which school Clement Atlee went to).
Just to pick you up though andy - while I agree that the sentiment is slightly strange regarding the wedding / funerals question, I would argue that there is absolutely no necessity for a Microwave Oven specifically, but that's just my opinion .

No, I'd agree - but then I would suggest that there's not really a 'need' to go to someone's wedding either - it just shows the strange methods they use to judge whether people are above or below the breadline.

I mean, what if someone had a microwave but, when they had children, all of their relatives were already married (or dead, obviously)? Would they count as being in poverty then

Re: What do you know about poverty?
3 right. Apparently, the DSS DO consider ovens (gas or electric conventional ovens) to be a priority, but not Microwaves (which they consider a luxury). I suppose there is some sense in that. If you have some sort of oven, you can cook food, and fresh food is actually cheaper than Microwave food.

Re: What do you know about poverty?
What about cooking fresh food in the microwave? LOL
Actually I was thinking more about babies' foods, bottles and the like....it's much more efficient to heat those up in the microwave (probably...I don't have kids so wouldn't know) than boiling a pan of water.

Re: What do you know about poverty?
I got 6 out of 10 right.
It seems that people's view of poverty is very different. I see poverty as being unable to afford the very basic things in life, or at least struggling to pay for them.
But some whine and bleat about poverty if they can't afford cable TV.
