Re: camping in the north-west
Birthday boy, there's a great site right by Ullswater Lake (Side Farm?). You camp right by the lake side and can have a dip - brrrrrrrrrr! Also one near(ish) to Lancaster with a river running through it - you reach it by travelling across towards Slaidburn then taking this mad, windy road across (when we went I thought my mate's car was on fire because his brakes were smoking so heavily). Can't remember what it's called - I'll see if I can dig it out for you later.
EDIT: Think the Lancaster one is Riverside Caravan Park, Wenning Avenue, High Bentham, Lancaster, LA2 7HS. Telephone: 01524 261272. Not, I guess, a wild outdoors kinda place as it had a play area and games room, but a goody for the kids, especially if it's hot as they can splash in the river.

Conniston is nice this time of year, you have a camp site right at the side of the lake, the village is only a few hundred yards away where there are several pubs, lake Windermere is also on the doorstep where you can take a ride on one of the many boats that run up and down the lake.
