Help with Strimmers! NOT STRIPPERS :D

Hello everyone,

My parents are needing a strimmer for their garden.

I do not know what is a good strimmer so I thought I would ask here, done a search and nothing came up.

I have been looking at 2 makes:

Bosch Art Combination 23
Flymo Powertrim 500

Both are telescopic/extendable, but my main question is;

what is the better one for changing the strimmer line?

Argos does not explain all this when looking at the catalogue

Have they got the same models at your local DIY centre? You could check out replacing the problem parts in person.

Re: Help with Strimmers! NOT STRIPPERS :D

You go into Argos and ask to have a look at it first. Explain why.

To be honest, every strimmer I've laid hands on has been a nightmare. Line breaks too easy, and they make a mess. Plus, if you don't clean it, things set up home in the grass welded underneath

Re: Help with Strimmers! NOT STRIPPERS :D

I had a Flymo, line was forever breaking and didn't autofeed. Eventually it just died.

Replaced it with a Black & Decker, line still breaks occasionally but at least the autofeed works.

For some things the Flymo was better, for others the B&D is better. One important point is the weight, the B&D is heavier so I have to keep stopping!

Re: Help with Strimmers! NOT STRIPPERS :D

Got a Flymo revolution model... one with two set's of grips that you use to hold it for trimming or edging.

Not had to change a line yet, and the autofeed is pretty reliable, though not ideal.
It lets a little line out on startup, so if you can't get a decent run going, you waste a bit every time.

It has survived being abused, held upward to slash ivy from a wall

Re: Help with Strimmers! NOT STRIPPERS :D

its more how to change the line I bothered about.

I would like one that is on its own reel and you put the reel on, but I don't want one that you have to manually take ages putting the line in, then cutting it to size.

do you get what I mean?

Well whatever you go for they are damned fiddly to sort.Trouble is that strimmers are so damned useful for those bits of the garden a mower just doesn't reach.

If you can get hold of a Which issue that covers strimmers it might be useful..maybe your local library has a copy or two?
