BBC2 Tonight, Slaugterhouse

Did anyone else watch it?

Gritty, most of the time Gruesome but strangely interesting.

After watching the first 30 seconds did not think I would last the whole hour but I did.

Got a bit political halfway through though, what were your thoughts if you watched it?

Re: BBC2 Tonight, Slaugterhouse

I decided against watching it as I am quite aware of the reality of eating meat (but still do as I can live with the reality)

Still I might catch the inevitable repeat on BBC4.

Re: BBC2 Tonight, Slaugterhouse

I'm a meat-eater and if I watched a program like this it would not make me consider turning veggie one little bit. I think most people are fully aware of what goes on in places like these but most people tend to ignore them as they are a part of life. Most people would like to believe that all these animals are treated humanely but the cold harsh reality is they are not and I can imagine some human beings getting some kind of satisfaction in treating these animals badly and it's this that I cannot stand. The other day I was sitting in traffic looking at some lambs and they did look cute as they bounded across the fields but we need to understand that they are there for one reason and one reason only, us humans...unfortunately.

The one thing that I find hard to listen to is when pigs start squealling. Hearing them in such distress is one of saddest noises in the world IMO.

While it was a long time ago, I have seen the slaughter of pigs (fairly) up close. I certainly didn't witness any specific 'cruelty' (always assuming the slaughter method etc. is 'humane')

During the time I watched I don't recall any pig squealing at all.
The racket they make during feeding time is another matter - boy can they make a noise! Then the relative quiet of their slobbering as they get their noses on the trough. lol.

Re: BBC2 Tonight, Slaugterhouse

As the alternative was Big Brother, I did watch this, as much for local interest as anything else. I worked full time on farms for the first six years of my working life, so have seen some of this at first hand in the past. I enjoy all kinds of food, fish, meat etc. It did not in any way put me off eating meat, animals themselves are capable of much more brutality when eating one another. I find pictures of extreme cruelty and barbarism inflicted on fellow humans far harder to take. Admittedly one or two ( one in particular ) individuals appeared to gloat and express 'enjoyment' in what they were doing, but you would find the same sort of gallows humour, in the forces, hospitals, funeral parlours etc, the fact that the camara's where there no doubt led to a great deal of bravado.

Re: BBC2 Tonight, Slaugterhouse

I watched the first half hour before I had to go out at 10...I thought it was interesting. I love eating meat, but I have never really seen the full-on gory view of watching an animal being killed for my food before.

I am glad that I have. My views have not changed, I'll be having my ham sandwich in a moment, but I thought the most interesting part was the segment with the Kosher slaughterman.

I was very impressed with the humanity of that man, and whilst I don't think Kosher killing is the most humane, his attitude to taking a life makes him the kind of bloke I'd like to slaughter my meat.

Compared to the yob with the blue eyes, who went roung shouting and kicking animals, poking them in the eyes etc...it is disrespectful of the process.

If it's repeated I will catch the last half-hour.

I think the Doctor Who storyline beat you to that idea..although not quite as graphic, obviously.
