Cloning and personalities
It just occured to me today that if (and when presumably) we clone humans; will the personality/character be cloned too? Maybe your answer depends on your beliefs? Is personality formed by chemicals or genes or spirit or given from a higher being etc...
If you cloned someone at birth and allowed them to grow up separated from each other. One in a safe middleclass family environment and the other in a hard working class environment with abuse and povety, how would they both turn out...
Hmmmmmm

Re: Cloning and personalities
I would hazard a guess they would both be different. I would even think that if they are brought up together. It's the way the links in the brain are formed that shapes much of your personality not your genetic makeup. I know a couple of sets of identical twins who have different personalities.

Re: Cloning and personalities
Surely much of a personality/character is created from experiences of life. As Shaun states twins (identical in every way) can have different personalities.
I like the sound of your "Experiment" though, clone one in middle class and one in lower.
Qucik EDIT - Not that I condone or believe cloaning is acceptable, yes if it can cure or save somebody then fine but not designer kids.

Re: Cloning and personalities
It's the old heredity versus nurture. They would be different in some ways because of the differences in environment but very similar in other regards.
Think of identical twins who have been separated at birth and grown up miles apart in completely different environments but still have similar occurences and behaviour and life stories to recount.

Re: Cloning and personalities
Are personality / beleifs not part of the growing up phase? So assuming they had *exactly* the same upbringing with the same experiences that it would be right to assume that they would be the same but if just *one* thing was different that that would be like altering the time line thus possibly having a drastic result on the end result?
Man that was deep for me!

Re: Cloning and personalities
There is a wonderful SF book by CJ Cherryh that examines this in some depth. It's called Cyteen and in this story a special personage is murdered and she is replaced by a clone because the government she works for needs her particular skills in cloning..So they try to raise the young clone in the same way that the original was raised even down to reproducing the sad and bad events of the original's life..
I heartily recommend it...It made me ponder about how if we do get cloning of humans should they have the same rights as the original? What particular pitfalls should we be thinking about ahead of such a situation and why would we want to clone particular individuals? After all there will be those who want to clone their pets..Won't there?
I know,I should get a life and not worry about these things...

Re: Cloning and personalities
Just saw a trailer for a film tonight at the cinema...forgotten the name of it but it was about clonining and they couldnt tell which was the genuine human and which was the clone when they had to kill them.
It had an 'X files' style to it. Looked like a good film.

Re: Cloning and personalities
my personal belief is that their traits genetically will be the same but life experiance and being able to learn diffarent things in diffarent ways will make that person diffarent.
personality will be diffarent but share simaler lines in aggression and forward thinking.

I should think that was 'The Island' with Ewan McGregor - looks good, so we'll be checking that out.
As for cloning, I've got no problem with it. In fact, I hope they get it sorted within the next 5 years - that'll mean that I can progress with my plan to create an army of Nugs, that will take over the world with bad puns
