100 Greatest War Films
http://www.channel4.com/film/newsfea...lms/index.html
Well - did anyone watch it and what did you think? I watched the last twenty - I usually do tune in towards the end of this type of thing. I disagreed that Saving Private Ryan should be number 1. The battle sequences are the most realistic that anyone will ever see, sat safely at home in an armchair, but the plot has holes. For me, Schindler's List should have been number 1 - it's more than a war film; it's a testimony. A powerful one at that. My other top films include Black Hawk Down, Platoon, and Hamburger Hill. I can watch, but don't really get anything out of, the glossy daring do type of movie - movies like the Great Escape and Battle of the Midway - where the bad guys are bad and the good guys are good. The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now aren't war movies - they're pyschological movies, thin on plot, set against the Vietnam war. They shouldn't have featured. I dislike them both.
Thoughts...

Re: 100 Greatest War Films
Nope - I saw it was on, but war films don't really interest me enough to actually watch it.

Schindler's List is the most powerful film I have seen. Period. It's the only film I have come out of where the audience was totally silent.

The falling ash scene - like snow. The horror of it. Just incomprehensible.
