No Walking on the Carpets
Right, I am absolutley fuming and want your opinion. We returned back to school last Wednesday and two areas of the school were carpeted, the main entrance and another busy area. This week a memo goes around to all staff and pupils stating that no one is to walk on these carpeted areas unless you are visiting rooms off of these carpeted areas.
So if you want to get to another room which is the other side of the carpet you have to go outside around and in another door at which point you could have in excess of 100 people all in one small area which is also a fire exit. One this is very chaotic and causes many problems and two is a health and safety hazzard I think. This is in one area as the main entrance is mainly offices but the other is one of the main school corridoors.
Now firstly my argument is one why spend the money on carpet when it could of been spent on other educational resources and two is causing problems as stated above. I would like your opinion on weather they should let us go down there or not, personally I think we should as this is one of the main routes and other reasons stated above. Now I know we are all entitled to our own opinion and I would just like a simple yes or no weather or not they should let us go down there.
By the way the reason they they do not want us walking down there is to keep the area smart but this was all triggered by one bit of chewing gum and a lump of mud which apparently took cleaners many many hours to get off.

Re: No Walking on the Carpets
I know what I would, and I may not have had the respect in school to have took my shoes of to do it, mind you is it quicker to go out of the main gate as that would have been my preffered option

Re: No Walking on the Carpets
Oh yeah we have taken our shoes off and walked on them but still get told get off as we are ruining the carpet by making it dirty. Yes I would be out the main gate but now I have started this I want to finish it.

Re: No Walking on the Carpets
Well the simple solution would be to somehow permanently ruin the carpet so it no longer matters...

Carpet is meant to be walked upon.

Just ignore the notice and walk on it.
Let them belittle themselves telling you off

Re: No Walking on the Carpets
I think its absolutly rediculas, one thing that will happen is pupils will try to destroy it, they have made the "carpet" a target,I think a trip over with a nice bottle of black ink is the way forward

Re: No Walking on the Carpets
Sigh!surely they bought the cheapest industrial carpeting?Expecting it to be walked on?Expecting students to be the gum chewing, mudplaying, litter louting students of everyday experience?
Or did someone REALLY think they could buy expensive Wilton carpeting on which everyone would glide effortlessly?
My suggestion, based on the description of the scrum entailed in using the alternative route and the small amount of room at the suggested other entry, would be to raise the health and safety aspect with who ever is the officially elected Health and Safety Representative among the staff.Particularly stress any dangers and what would happen if someone was crushed or injured especially if the fire alarm sounded as everyone was trying to enter the school at these fire exits.
Show some maturity in your response(rather than breaking the rules) and you might be surprised.Do you have a school council?Maybe going through the class reps would be one way of approaching it.

Typical - only because it's new - as someone suggested, once the newness has worn off everything will be back to normal.
Whose stupid idea was it to carpet a part of a school and then declare it off-limits? Is it any wonder kids have no respect for these idiots.

Re: No Walking on the Carpets
Schools are a breeding ground for petty rules. It's part of life and growing up. At my school, I recall, we had to go a very long way round, outside so that we didn't go past the staff room or heads room. We accepted that. It was the way things are.
It may seem stupid to carpet a floor and then say keep off, but has anyone thought why those areas were chosen to be carpeted. Probably because the area was too noisy with footfall, causing disturbance to classes in progress? Or possibly the original covering had worn and was becoming unsafe. Even so especially for a main entrance area, the school is trying to make a statement, that it is well maintained and a fit environment in which it's pupils can learn. I'm not surprised then that the majority are being "punished" because of the thoughtless actions of whoever trod mud or chewing gum into the carpet.
