Which way do I turn now?

Ever have a day where you decide, right thats it, i'm, out of this ****y little company because no matter how hard I try I'm going no where?

Well today I had that idea.
I seriously gotta get out of this place. Its slowly destroying me and my will to live, and I stress I am NOT over hyping it.

I currently work in 1st line desktop support with a bit of software and telephony thrown in there.
Which way should I try and move now? I have 18 months of sheer hell behind me

I was demoted today, because there no need for my role anymore, my contract upgrade was put on indefinate hold because I got a dsciplinary. There simply is nothing left for me at my current place.

Re: Which way do I turn now?

Its always tough when you realise that you need out of a place.
Once that happens there isn't any turning back.

I'd keep your head down and just plug away at any jobs you see that take your fancy. I wouldn't do anything drastic like walking out until you have something else to go to.

My guess is much of this was due to the way you feel about your work.

First step is to put this negativity behind you for the moment - try, for now, to do the job as well as you can - it'll actually feel better too.

And then...

That means you need to do a couple of things:

1) Update your CV
2) Circulate your CV to some agencies
3) Look for job opportunities that you think you'd enjoy
4) Do NOT quit your present job, just yet
5) Do NOT think of any ways in which you'll get even when you've left
6) Do everything you can to ensure that when you do leave you'll get a reasonable reference, at least.

I suspect you're thinking of not going into a support role next time - shame, because that's what you've got experience of, so that's what they'll pick up on from your CV.

But, if you look around carefully, you may find a support role that has some development opportunities, or simply a role with a company where a sideways move is easier.

Watch out, however for the mistake of "out of the frying pan, into the fire" - make sure that you don't pick the next job because you want to get out of this one - pick the next job because you want it.

Shoot! Do we know each other and work at the same place?

I am in the same boat as you, in sales though, feel like I am burning out, over stressed, depressed and probably an alcoholic to boot.

You are not alone.

Re: Which way do I turn now?

Cheers guys,

I dont mind working in a support role, just not what I currently do, which is mainly catch and dispatch to some other people to fix.
I have previously worked as a network admin and this 1st line role is just destroying me. Theres no challenge, I can go to work and switch off.

I thought great big international company that specialises in gov contracts (no no name dropping here but some will guess).

I think I could deal with a second line role, but proeferably somewhere that acknowledged that you are a living breathing human being and that you arent confortable wearing a damned headset for 8 hours a day.
A company that doesnt actively FORCE you to dumb down
A company that doesnt FORCE you to not fix a problem you can because it will mean your on the call for more than 5 minutes
and a company that actually understands what customer relation and care actually mean.

achieve the kpi's and you are doing a good job

our 'target orientated' culture is in danger of disappearing up its own goals, methinks
