Car ownership vs car leasing

I'm currently weighing up both sides of the coin regarding a new car.

Should I buy a car, which would likely incur interest charges or lease a car?

Does anyone have any pros/cons on each?

Re: Car ownership vs car leasing

Pros of Owning - You get to keep it at the end
Cons of Owning - With any problems, dinks, and severe depreciation.

Pros of Leasing - You get to change it at the end of the lease
Cons of Leasing - fairly expensive for what you get sometimes.

Re: Car ownership vs car leasing

Rough figures....but what I spend on my car (Vectra 2.2d SRi 53 plate)...cost and interest... I could lease a BMW Z4!

...I'm thinking I'd rather get a much better car for my monthly outgoing!

For example...the cheapest Z4 costs £335 pm lease (source: carleasing.co.uk). I pay about £350 pm for my Vectra.

Lease
At the end of the 3 year leasing term I would have paid approx £12,000.

Ownership
At the end of 3 years of my current car..I would have spent about £500 more...but I would own the car and could resell, tradein...prob for about £5K-7K

...hmmm, simple maths seem to make the choice clear!

not necessarily, it depends what the leasing deal includes - servicing & consumables such as tyres can make a big difference.

isn't this your 'company' car, though, Cas - would the Beamer be another tax band to your existing? (be gentle - i go to work on a pushbike )

Re: Car ownership vs car leasing

Not sure if road tax will go up...tho my insurance doubles...(well did for when I calc'd a X5)

Yes, it'll be financed by a company car allowance ...so if I leased a car...all that money (which isn't really mine) is gone. ...but if I used it to buy a car...I could get 1/3 of it back!...hmmm

is your insurance and road tax covered by the leasing company or do you still have to pay them seperately?

is your servicing/mot's covered also or do you still have to pay them too?
