Qualcast Super panther Lawn Mower

Hi all

Any ideas on the best way to shapen the blades on this 'old' lawn mower ?

Many thanks

Re: Qualcast Super panther Lawn Mower

The best way is take to someone who services them or....
If you want to do it yourself is with a file, using the drawfile method ie the file is held in two hands and you go backwards and forwards to keep the surface flat
It will not be easy or quick
DO NOT try and put an edge on like a knife..

The blades should have an edge more like scissors

The other thing is, it is quite often the setting up of the blades the makes sure it cuts not the sharpness of the blades (the same as scissors)

Re: Qualcast Super panther Lawn Mower

why not get a new one

http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/P...ProductID=1670

- at that price it would probably cost nearly as much to have yours professionally sharpened

Re: Qualcast Super panther Lawn Mower

if they are not too badly 'chunked' then you may get away with an oil stone to 'keen' them up

An oilstone (with some oil of course) or a whetstone (with water).
and lots of elbow grease. Sharpen in one direction along and away from the blade and not in a rubbing back'n'forth motion.
It will cost as much as the price of a new mower to have them sharpened professionally.

I was not sure where to shapen the actual blades or the 'plate' under the mower which the blades cut against. Hope that makes sense.

I did look at a new ones but I do not think it has a roller which the old one 1970s !

just the blades AFAIK, there should be an adjustment to move the blades closer to the plate after sharpening.

<edit> just seen Flubflow's post

Nope. It's not my file. It's a link (I don't tend to keep pictures of sheep on my hard drive ).

Back on topic. Save yourself some back ache. Here's a cheap electric mower at B&Q, £38.....
