Criminals and thugs

I decided to post this one after reading the other thread about a woman with children having herr house broken into by armed men looking for some guy who lived next door.

We have two pubs in our town that are notably very rough places, the one pub shut a few years ago after I believe the magistrates took away the licence. Although I dont agree with this because at least it kept all the scum in one place.
The pub has recently re-opened, and the landlord/landlady did a tour of the other pubs meeting people and telling them. that they would not accept any trouble and asked if people could point out trouble makers to them because they were not from around this area, and hence would not know them.
I have been in there a few times with a couple of mates since it's re-opened about a month ago and apart from being a bit quiet it has been a reasonably enjoyable experience.

I went in just before christmas with two mates, it seemed to be a bit busier and there was a bit of an atmosphere about the place. I wanted to go to the toilet so told my one mate to get them in. I walked back from the toilet and could see my one mate moved to the end of the bar, and the other had a big guy face to face with him! I walked up and said "What's going on" the big guy turned and looked at me, and then said 'Oh, your Kevin xyz aren't you" I said "yes...and?" he then replied "the last time I saw you, you were giving my brother a good kicking on King Street"

He then offered his hand and we shook, he said 'are these friends of yours" I told him they were and he said "thats OK then" (apparently he had gone upto them and asked what they were looking for) I enquired about the health of his brother, (hoping the good kicking hadn't done him too much harm) and he said "he's inside again, done a couple of stretches for GBH and now in for second armed robbery stretch" he also mentioned that he has been inside for a number of years and offences himself.

He asked if I still lived in my old area, and I told him I did. (I dont) He mentioned where he lives, it's a new small council housing estate known locally as "CrookSide" He then said "we will have to meet up in here for a drink one night" He then turned around to his mate, said goodbye and they both left! Both my mates were sh**ing themselves.

Nothing changed though, I could of told you all when I was in school these brothers were going to spend most of their adult life in prison. They spent a good deal of earlier life in borstal, so why wouldn't they carry it on thrughout adult life. I guess there are still people who believe these guys should be given another chance, I certainly won't be meeting up for a drink and we have given the pub a miss since that episode.

Looks like the pub is going back to it's old ways again.

And the worst thing I feel about this is that way of life is actually considered ‘normalâà¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ or ‘acceptableà¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ by a great many people

The funny part though was my mate calling me everything about the incident! he couldn't see that because I knew the guy he got out of there in one piece.

I did disagree with the pub losing it's licence and closing, we never went in there before because it was full of trouble makers. It has however meant that the trouble makers have spread around the other pubs, but hopefully now they will al go back there. It is very bad for the landlors/landlady who have invested money in the premises, if they dont nip it in the bud the place will be exactly as it was a few years ago.

I guess his brother is a lot bigger now than when I gave him a kicking though! He was a bit of a bully and picked on me one day, I turned very nasty and he never bothered with me after that...I hope his brother forgets to tell him he met me when he comes out, he may have a long memory.

Might be nice if someone gave the new landlord a wink and a nod about what maybe happening.

He has been told, my mate who had the confrontation got very friendly with the landlord when we met him before the pub re-opened, and has seen him and mentioned it. The landlord apologised about the incident and said he wished it was mentioned at the time so the could put a face to the guy in question. I think it's an uphill struggle for the landlord, he is from the Midlands area so doesn't know the local thugs and drug dealers. He previously rean a pub for a couple of years that had a very bad reputation on the outskirts of a rough housing estate. (Nottingham I think) he said the magistrates and police were very happy with the way he was running things, but he had the benefit of growing up in that area and knowing who, and who not to allow into the pub.

It's getting pretty bad, because the other rough pub shut down a few months ago when the police/magistrates put a curfew of 18:00hrs on the place. That has now been bought by someone who has come from Austrailia!
I guess it had to be someone a long way away who didn't know about it's reputation.

To make matters worse my local, is the only friendly pub in town and it's up for sale. I hope the new owners continue to keep things pretty much as they are, cos the present landlord/lady have done a great job for the past 21 years.

I also think things will be worse when local councils are dealing with licencing applications when the licencing laws change next year. The licence from the one rough pub was taken away because it was too rowdy for the pensioners living in sheltered accomodation opposite. Three of the four sheltered accomodation for pensioners in town have been built right next/near to public houses, whilst I can fully understand these people complaining it should be noted that the pubs were trading for over 100 years before the council built sheltered accomodation on their doorsteps.

My local council screw up enough, without letting them loose on licencing for public houses.
