Weird Phone Messages
Right, the phone rang this morning and to my surprise, it said i had won £25.000 and a Spanish Cruise. I thought, yeah right, listened to more of it and put the handset down half way through the message. Now my question is how do these companys get my phone number, because for one im ex directory.
You thoughts/Experiences?

Not really. It's just an irritation - one you'll probably get more of.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that it allows them to get around the TPS - but I could be wrong - I'm sure someone will be able to confirm or deny that

Quite a few of them call from abroad, they won't legally be bound by the TPS.

Yes, you are right. If a computer picks a number from a directory* and decides to call Mr Joe Bloggs on 01234 567890 it must check that that person has not registered with TPS before the phone call is made. If an autodialer generates a random phone number, say 01234 567890, then there is no requirement and, indeed, no method available to check the number with TPS.
* where a directory can be any list of names and phone numbers, such as phone directory, electoral role, marketing list, etc.

Re: Weird Phone Messages
Market research is exempt from TPS though, sales calls etc aren't however and so they can be fined for dialling a TPS-subscribed number.
TPS still scares the shiit out of them though.
