Indoor Excercise
OK after my quack told me I need to do more excercise what can I do indoors without buying a treadmill, bike etc. I play golf at least once a week (although it's dying off when the winter nights are drawing in)
Needs to be gentle as to not wake my son but enough to get me a workout (preferably to take a short, VERY short period of time to perform)
I.e. MAX benefit for least effort!!
No use joining a gym cos I never go even though I pay anything upto £40 per month (no longer a member)

What about isometrics, or has that been consigned to the dustbin of exercise history?
EDIT So I thought that I'd better check. Googling +isometrics +exercise gives over 11,000 hits, so someone must still be doing it.

Yoga is another alternative, but it does depend on what kind of exercise you need.
You can buy devices that exercise your muscles electronically e.g. the Rio ab belt while you do other things. Supposed to really tone up your abdominal muscles.
You can get others which will allow you to tone up other parts of your body.
But that's only part of it. Are you exercising to lose weight or get fit? Are you trying to build up strength, speed, stamina or suppleness?

Re: Indoor Excercise
OK lets clear something up - I'm not fat (just big boned!) no I need to raise my overall fitness level not lose weight etc. I don't think yoga is my thing and I am going to need to search for "isometrics"!!

In that case you need exercise that will raise your heart rate and keep it there for a while - strengthen the heart muscle so it needs fewer squishes to shift the blood. Try walking - join the ramblers or an orienteering group if you want to work your brain at the same time as your heart.

Re: Indoor Excercise
If you put the minimum into excercise, you'l get minimal results.
The impression I get is that you want to be doing aerobic excerise to improve your all round fitness. The best way to achieve this is by doing Cardio Vascular excercise, which would be; Running, Cycling, Rowing, Swimming, etc.
Maybe do a short, 15-20 minute run a few nights of the week, or one run, and a longer period cycling, or something along those lines.

Being as you have not been averse to paying for a gym, have you thought about personal training
http://www.fperfect.com/index.htm
Come to your house, the first sessions are £45 each so in your budget range and they will work out a program to suit your requirements. Though short time will be minimum of 30 mins a go or it is pointless.

Re: Indoor Excercise
There is no need to run to the pub - phone your order through to them in good time.

Sorry, but that's not really possible (and it's not good for you either). A longer period of sustained light exercise to raise the heartrate is better than a short burst of hard activity.
Why not take your kid swimming?

Re: Indoor Excercise
I think you should think about a bike. If space is a problem you can fold them up pretty small. Or a rowing machine...that is good cardio.
