Wasp Nest
I have a problem with a Wasp nest, I live in a dormer bungalow with attics on the side of the bedrooms upstairs. The little blighters have nested in the side attic, I got in there last night with the vacuum cleaner and sucked up most of the nest along with a few hundred wasps.
I made a very hasty retreat involving a couple of sumersaults and a back flip.
I went back up a bit later and got another hundred or so that were on the window sill! I set fire to 2 vacuum cleaner bags full of them.
I have sealed up the attic entrance for now but was wondering if anyone had suggestions for something to put up there to finish the rest of them off?

I think its going to be difficult as they are on top of the purline timber, if I can get the council to do it I guess that is going to cost me a day in lost wages at least.
I was told there were wasp traps, with some sort of powder in them?
Has anyone seen these or know how effective they are.

Re: Wasp Nest
I don't think the council does it as such, but they have a list of recommended exterminators - and I don't think it's incredibly expensive.
You could just leave it - winter will be here soon, and they will die off - wasps don't reuse nests, they always build new ones - so once the winter comes, go up there and destroy it all, including any queen hibernation thingys (it's a technical term ).
Of course, if you have kids around then you probably wouldn't want to wait - but if they're not causing you any probs often it's best just to ignore them if possible

The council do provide a pest extermination service. Last time is used it i think it cost about £25 but that was about 6 years ago.
If you dont want to do that try fly spray

Yep, the environmental health department of our local council attended quickly when we had rats in the house They didn't charge a bean but the very nice man that came round did drink a lot of tea!

I have phoned and they dont deal with themselves but have a list of approved contractors.
I think its going to be difficult as the nest is above the purline and near to the wall, its awkward to explain but a very difficult place to get to.
I will see if I can get some of the foam type wasp killer tonight, as the powder will be useless due to the location. I would probably get more on myself than in/near the nest.
I am allergic to wasp and bee stings, so want the little sods out as soon as possible

Re: Wasp Nest
i had 2 wasp nests in the eaves last year and a nest under a tree in the garden.council took £35 to blast the nests in the eaves, drowned and napalmed the nest in the garden myself.Access is easy for the council workman as his equiptment consists of a bellows with powder in it with long attatchable tubes to reach the nest.Tesco do a spray/foam that sprays from 3 Metres costs about £2.99

I recall paying somewhere between £30 and £40 last year to have the council treat a wasp nest.
Edit: much like tw67 really except it was only one nest.

Get the council in. They'll charge anything from £30 to £50 and will have the treatment done in five minutes. They inject deadly powder into the nest which kills all the wasps in a couple of days. We have had three nests in five years and this has always worked. If your local council is as inefficient as ours (I had to go to the civic centre, queue up and pay by cheque - had to take about 2 hours off work ) any of the exterminators you find in the yellow pages will do exactly the same job for a similar price. They will probably turn up sooner, too.
@tw - Did you kill off all the wasps immediately with your 'Vietnam' approach? My dad tried that one year, it certainly was satisfying to do, but it sorely peed off the wasps that managed to escape. Both he and the dog had to run for it. The dog dived into the pool to hide and afterwards we picked six or eight dead wasps out of his coat. At least with a liquid or powdered poison, the little gits don't know their number's up until it's too late.

Hm, you're unlucky then. I gave our council a ring, told them where the nest was. The man treated it the next day, put the bill in the letter box and I sent them a cheque.

That's our local situation. The last time I had to have it done in our attic a few years ago it cost about £30.
I wouldn't really recommend a DIY exercise while the wasps are there. There was an item in the papers a couple of days ago about some pensioner who went up into his loft, was badly stung and, IIRC, ended up in hospital.
You have to get rid of the nest yourself later on, but a vacuum cleaner does the job nicely. I must admit that I was a bit squeamish about doing this, but the nests are simply a dry, papery type of substance that easily crumbles.

Re: Wasp Nest
You should use any good proprietry wasp killer (an aerosol spray is best) - don't forget to liberally spray around where they go in and out !!
Leave the nest in-situ...as someone before said they will not re-use the nest and no other wasps will re-inhabit it either. I believe there is some sort of hormone given off that prohibits wasps ever going near..it acts as a wasp inhibitor !!
We've had one on our loft for five years and never a wasp goes near !!
