Missing change?
Three men go into a motel. They pay $30 for the room. Each man pays $10 before going to the room. The clerk then realizes that they were given only a $25 room, and sends the bellboy to the room with $5. The bellhop keeps $2 as a tip and each man gets $1 back, ending up paying only $9 for the room.
3 x $9 is $27
With the $2 the bellboy kept, that's only $29.
Where's the missing dollar?

i dont get it? if he is given $5 to give back.... there are three men, so that's a dollar each, that leave's two, which the bellboy keeps.

Re: Missing change?
Exactly. He gave each one a dollar back, meaning, they each paid $9.
$9 x 3 = $27
$27 + $2 (he kept) = $29
They started with $30... Where is the other $?

10X3= 30
30-25=5
5-3=2
2 he took..... working it out that way it works
but if you say they each paid 9 and he kept two your right it doesnt work

Re: Missing change?
Don't get tied up in the linguistics. It's 2 different sums.
1) 3 x 10 = 30 = 25 + 5
2) 3 x 9 = 27 = 25 + 2
It's linguistic legerdemain trick you into believing there is a missing $ when in fact there is not.

Re: Missing change?
That's an old one
Each paid $9, $27 total, of which $25 paid for the room & the bell boy got $2
