another option? could you go by coach that's generally a lot cheaper but obviously the journey is longer

Re: Cheap Train tickets where?
well qjump and the trainline are the same company now, so its irrelevent which one you choose
oh, and virgin trains fares is powered by thetrainline so you are using the same thing for all three
personally, when i travel from A to B on virgin, i get the virgin value 7 day advance single tickets. they are limited availability and you are restricted to the specific train you use (the exact one it says on the ticket) but they are great value. £9 return from leeds to birmingham, who can complain about that?

Re: Cheap Train tickets where?
Try looking at buying a seperate ticket with all the different train operators to london do believe its cheaper that way than to buy a return from virgin

Wow, thanks for the astute post Nice to see someone going the extra yard to help
I use qjump which has been linked to by a couple of people already, price wise be sneaky with your departure and return time and it can make a big difference to cost. As has been said, advanced booking can drop the price a lot too so get it booked as soon as possible

Re: Cheap Train tickets where?
i do remember if you booked virgin trains a long while in advance you get a rather large discount.
As if i book 7 days in advance i can get single tickets from southampton to oxford for £7 a piece. 3 days in advance and its £9.50 a piece.
Who was the mug that forgot about this till two days before travel and was lumped with a £26.60 return ticket :-(
Single tickets are hardly any cheaper than returns I think its about £21-22 for a single (depending on cheap day or not)
Only problem with the cheap tickets are that your stuck on which train you get. You do get a seat reserved but thats not in the quite zone, which isnt allways that quiet :@
As last time i traveled on said train a mother and her two children got on at one of the stops and came and sat in the quiet zone.
They we're good for all of 5 minutes then they started shouting and argueing between each other about how unfare somthing was.
It was obvious that it was irritating alot of passengers in the carriage who had come in here for abit of piece, quiet and personal time, it usually works out well as people mutually respect this.
Everyone left them alone as there was no point in causing any hassle it would of just made things worse. To top it off she started using her mobile to call their farther as well (who they were going to meet it seems as everyone in the carriage could hear the conversation :@)
Needless to say this is the only time such an incident has happend and I do give kudos to virgin trains for implementing such a system, it would be nice for some gentle enforcement perhaps.

Call National Rail Enquiries on 08457 48 49 50 and ask about Apex Saver tickets.
You need to book at least a week in advance and have to specify exactly which trains you will be travelling on for both the outward and return journeys (they aren't available for all services, however), returns must be taken within a month on a specified day, but it's a lot cheaper.
See http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/info/t...tickets.asp#15 for details.
