Don't blame James - what could he seriously do? If he stood back it'd be a simple tap past, he wouldn't have got to the ball first diving hands first; better to go in Scholesy style & hope he put off Henry/just got lucky. At least there was a chance of saving the penalty, even if he'd been sent off, which of course he should have been.
Course, it didn't work, but then if Gerrard hadn't lost his nerve he wouldn't have been in that position. And if Heskey hadn't kicked a random Frenchman giving away the first goal, Gerrard wouldn't have lost his nerve. And if Sven hadn't given Heskey something more fit for his ability, like cutting the crusts off the 1/2 time sandwiches, Heskey wouldn't have been anywhere a Frechman (or Arsenal player, for those of you who forgot to turn ITVs dismal commentary off).
