Question A chance to save someone from your fate?

A bloke voice mailed me about my CV he'd found on one of the websites I job search on. Agency but I can't be picky. 1st line tech support though Share your horror stories and tales of woe just so I know whether I should bother or not. I have to balance pride and health against the desire for some cash and the demands of my creditors

Re: A chance to save someone from your fate?

I like tech support First line support is not an ideal job... depends on the company really, as to how good it will be.

If you can deal with stressed/ naive/ annoyed/ arrogant/ people then call centre work is for you When i started they they told us the average time that someone was employed was six months... i have been here more than twice that so i must be able to survive it quite well!!

I could tell you all sorts of horror stories, but then also a lot of amusing stories as well. My advise would be that if you haven't done work like this before then give it a shot. After all, you can always leave again. If you need the money then at least this will earn you some!

Re: A chance to save someone from your fate?

Should you go for it or not? Depends on if it's a job or a career you want.

I have done the same job as the guy above me for almost 3 years, and I swear atleast once a shift I think that maybe death for me would be a blessed release.

But for the first 6-9 months it's a dcent job, it's all new so the shifts go fast and it helps you to keep with things witin IT. So if you need the cash go for it, just plan on making it your future for god sake.

Methinks if an old dear was screaming for help getting the lid off her pickle jar, you'd crawl over broken glass and swim through boiling oil to help her - and you'd offer advice on what the pickle would best accompany

I've trained students in how to use a particularly tricky bit of software - believe me when I say standards are falling I dunno - I could give it a try but then again, would I join the army to see if I liked war?

Sounds bad - lot of stress.

I wish I knew what I wanted - I've always been a leaf in life's winds. I'm on borrowed time with the Job Centre lot, plus my financial management is best described as a series of crises. I hate it when I can't make clear judgements

they could be comments about the guy who wouldn't let you speak to me

I generally take the approach that while i am at work i am getting paid for sorting out problems and dealing with every customer that rings up... just today i spent 10 minutes while somebody tried to find the delete key on the keyboard....

When i am not at work i forget about it, the stress stays at work, as far as i am concerned, what is the point in stressing about it at home not going to let ntl take over my life!! I will help people outside work, but only if they are nice! the worst part of work is the people who don't listen to you. But then again, you do get an enormous sense of satisfaction when you sort out a problem that was tricky... I managed to get a blind person to do a tcp/ip refresh on windows 98 last year ago and when it worked i was nearly jumping up and down. sad i know... but i think the point i am making (in a very roundabout way) is like all the jobs i have done, you have good days and bad days, and try not to think about it when you are not at work.

The main attributes that you need:
1. Patience
2. More Patience
3. Ability to think quickly and logically
4. Problem solving
5. Nice telephone manner (although i am not sure if i have this one )

For me, much of that is age related - i.e. the older guys can't accept being told something by a younger guy. I've had to demonstrate that something will work before it's been accepted. Insecurity for you Mind you, I'm fast approaching old f**t status myself - I hope I can keep my ears and mind open I know my patience is going, and cardigans are starting to look attractive
