Flags

Why do some people seem to feel the need to have the word ENGLAND prominently displayed on the horizontal bar of the English flag? After all, you don't come across many tricolours with FRANCE emblazoned across them. Could these people find that they need constant reminding of their nationality or is it simply that if, until quite recently, you needed to make a display of patriotism you used the Union Jack (OK, if you insist, the Union flag)? We seem to have thrown away a world-wide recognised symbol for the sake of another run of the mill flag that is obviously unrecognisable unless you write the name of its country across it.

The people that manufacture and sell the things seem to have concluded that if you presented someone with a St George Cross without any text on it, they wouldn't know whose flag it is. Personally I refer to any rectangular piece of cloth that is based on the St George Cross but has other bits and pieces added to it a 'banner' rather than a 'flag'. It's sad because it perpetuates the idea that you can only fly the thing in support of some major sporting event. I bought an England flag during the last World Cup but made sure it was a proper St George Cross with nothing added. Although seeing as I'm about to move to Scotland I don't expect I'll get much more use out of it

Re: Flags

I've had enough of these flags.
They look stupid.
I for one, do NOT have one sticking out my car.

I like these flags.
They look good.
But I don't have one on my car either.
I am about to hang one out of my bathroom window though.

Lighten up people, what's so offensive about people showing their pride in their country? Get a life.

Euro 2004 is coming up, and lots of people (including me) are really excited about it. I don't have a flag hanging out of my car window, (I have a selection of official girly Euro 2004 t-shirts, tight, cropped etc... ), but it makes me smile each time I see a car pass by that does.

Re: Flags

Flags on cars may look good but they could be dangerous. Twice recently the car that I have been following has lost one of its flags. Fortunately they have fallen on the road in front of me, possible coming free because someone has opened the window slightly. What I fear is one coming free on the motorway and sticking to someones windscreen, blocking their vision.

So now we have to have a SPECIAL flag to differentiate us from the BNP?

S*D that! They can go find another flag. Or they can have the ones with ENGLAND printed on them. It would suit their IQ level.

Incog.

Surely the BNP version would have to have INGERLAND printed on it?
