The first car!

I've pretty much decided what my first car is going to be. I'm 21 and at this time I pretty much either borrow my parents' cars or I bike where I want to go. I've been driving for almost 6 years and I'm now starting to itch to buy my own car. I'm single, and don't have a family, and don't plan on having one for a few more years. It is a time to enjoy life. I am now officially looking for a previously owned C4 Corvette.

One can get an EXCELLENT condition 1990 C4 Corvette with 2,000 to 3,000 miles for £6,000. That is a little over my budget, but I would suffice for a good condition C4 convertible, between the years 1990 and 1996 with up to 50K or so miles. That should bring it down to about £3,500 to £4,000.

Engine: 5.7L V8 engine

0-60mph: 6.3 seconds [standard transmission, for the convertible]

Top speed: Over 150 mph

1/4mile: 14.8 seconds, up to 95 mph

Lateral acceleration: .89 g

There is a huge spike in prices if you cross into the C5 arena. I'm now talking a jump to at least £13,000. I doubt I'll be able to afford that, unless I get the job at Microsoft I'm so coveting. I'll wait and see. I'm hoping to buy in 2006.

What was your very first car? And if you've never owned one, what would you like it to be? (Be reasonable)

Here are some pictures of the C4. I want a convertible and it should be black or blue.

Re: The first car!

I'll avoid the jokes about huskies and sleds and go straight to the advice. To be honest mate, i'd avoid the C4. They were a bit of a nightmare. I'd go for a high (highway) mileage (try not to go for the earliest) C5. Make sure you get a Carfax report (it looks like you get them up there), and don't be fobbed off by the dealer's excuses, if he won't show it. Another option is the Camaro. It has an ever so slightly scaled down version of the Vette's engine, and still got enough grunt. (the Z28 model is faster than the Vette), but much cheaper. You can get a 95 Camaro Z28, for a 90 Vette.

If you still want to go for that C4, i'd at least avoid that one. 14 years old and 3k on the clock? Even if its true it must of been sitting in a garage most of the year, and that won't do it any good.

HTH

Edit: Oh, first car Nissan Micra (Think Chevy Geo, but smaller. And Japanese). Wern't a bad little car actually. Although the absense of power steering was a pain in the arse.

Re: The first car!

Yeah, what is happening to your "petrol" prices? (It still doesn't sound normal to call it petrol :pp ) Ours are at an all time high. I filled up today at 85¢ per liter! [34 pence (gosh our currency is the suck)] That is quite a bit higher than the usual 65¢ a liter.

I'm not going for that one in particular! I'm not even thinking of buying until 2006. I'll find one that is well-taken care of. My friend's dad, who owns a C5, owned a C4 and never had any complaints. It isn't a C5, but it still is a Corvette, which is what I want. I want the name So a Camaro is out of the question.

I cannot afford a C5 unless I get the job at Microsoft, or if my business suddenly started making significant profits. I'm 21, not 41.

Ours went from 78.9p to 80.9p - I would be very concerned if they had gone from .65 to .85 regardless of the currency involved......

Re: The first car!

My heart bleeds for you mate. Its about 80p here now.

Why is it weird to call it petrol? I thought the canucks always called it that. Isn't one of your petrol/gas stations called "Petro-Canada"?

Edit, oh and when I said the Camaro is faster than Vette, I meant 95 Camaro vs 90 Vette. If you compare the Camaro vs Corvette of the same years, the Corvette is much faster naturally. Just wanted to clear that up in case it confused anyone.

We've got our Mr. Brown the Chancellor who puts his little 90% tax on our petrol. Isn't he nice?

A quick analysis of posting times would give about 43 mins - assuming Bifta was not distracted elsewhere

No, we've always called is gas, short for gasoline. Petro-Canada is a company that deals in petroleum. They just so happens to have gas stations too, but they trade in crude oil and I think they own some refineries.

Petrol is short for petroleum, which is the equivalent of crude oil.

I just want a Corvette. I just need one. I'm in love with it and I know eventually I'll own a C5 and a C6.
