Mud room
Incog asked me what a mud room is...
A mud room is where you hang your coat and take your shoes off before going into someone's house. Most people have either a mud room, or the foyer is considered the mud room. A dedicated mud room usually has its own door (glass) and is not really heated.
I know in the southern states you don't take your shoes off when you go into someone's house and that you trample around with your shoes. It feels a little ... wrong to me. I don't know. We always take our shoes off, especially in the winter when your boots are covered in grime, snow, and mud.
I much prefer going around in socks (in the winter), or even better going around in bare feet (rest of the year).

Re: Mud room
No... we have a porch too, in addition to a mudroom. A mudroom allows you to close the mudroom door before entering the house, preventing all the snow and wind from blowing in.

Re: Mud room
In the Thai culture it is very very rude not to take your shoes off when you go into someone's house.
I don't have anywhere for shoes, i live in a shared house, i keep them on til i get to my room and then change to my lovely slippers

Re: Mud room
we call that a cloakroom or a closet or a cupboard or a cubbyhole depending on where in the uk you live...........
a MUD room is a "multi user dungeon" that is used for games on the net

Slippers here = trainers, the slippers you're on about we call House Slippers .. don't ask why, it confuses me too when you hear people in a sports shop asking for a pair of Nike slippers in a size 10.
