The Combined Brain Power of Cable Forum
Something just got me thinking about what would be the combined brain power of the Cable Forum membership. In a shallow (EDIT, hastily) and ill thought out attempt to tell, I thought I'd start this thread.
Ok, edited my post because I have to agree with Kink, letters after name have nothing to do with 'Brain Power', told you it was hasty.

Re: The Combined Brain Power of Cable Forum
Not sure that letters after one's name can be equated with brain power
But am not sure how you could measure the brain power of the combined membership of the forum...... but i have to disagree that the letters have anything more to do with brain power and intelligence than clotted cream in the fridge
Errrr.....

Re: The Combined Brain Power of Cable Forum
very impressive
Having said that, I also think the overall 'brain power' in the forum is above average, anyway.
- oh & I've got an HND, but no-one puts that after their name :pp
<edit> to remove the comment on letters, as it's no longer relevant

Was worried you might take offence People can get very touchy about qualifications and their supposed relation to intelligence.... didn't want to alienate any of our members who did not or chose not to continue along the higher education route but are nonetheless intelligent and achieve more than a lot of other people who chose to have their education measured by passing examinations
I voted anyway..... am not a total spoilsport

That's ok, I didn't take offence, and I completely agree with what you're saying. In my haste I think I mis-titled this thread.

Re: The Combined Brain Power of Cable Forum
This is somewhat flawed since it assumes that you need to have taken exams to be intelligent.
I never went to university so I have no degrees or anything (I did do something called a TEC while at BT in the early 80's) - however I consider myself to be quite intelligent - the only real measure I have is that I consistantly score just over 130 on IQ tests (and I have a nice management/technical job)

Re: The Combined Brain Power of Cable Forum
i see everyones point, maybe we are talking more about academia than intelligence....for a start there are many forms of intelligence, including emotional intelligence

Re: The Combined Brain Power of Cable Forum
exam results do not give a true picture.......anyone can swot for a day or two before sitting them and pass.....all forgotten within a few months.
comparing types of results is wrong as well.....gce exams were harder than todays a-levels and a poor grade pass at cse level was harder to get than a a+ gcse today........
did anyone see the tv series called "that'll teach em" where they got a class of students all who had just breezed about 15 gcse's each and they gave them an 11+ exam from the sixties.........2 kids passed it the rest failed miserably......roflmfao-gcb

Re: The Combined Brain Power of Cable Forum
One of the stupidest people I've ever met was doing a PhD at Uni (he passed). He had no common sense whatsover, he virtually needed help crossing the road. In his field he was brilliant (computing, speech recognition), but he had no real world skills.

Re: The Combined Brain Power of Cable Forum
The combined brain power of members of this forum is undoubtedly awesome. This is especially when you consider their diverse range of backgrounds, lifestyles, training, experiences, schooling, indeed anything and everything that goes to make each of us as diverse and individual as we are.
Academic qualifications are one thing, and OK society does need ppl who can think. However if we do not have those who can be practical, the academics would never be able to work out how to put their ideas to good use. Good schooling is not enough by itself. There are numerous examples of extremely successful businesses set up by those with next to no formal education. Get up and Go counts for as much as "brain power". And of course even if you do not run your own business, have loads of letters after your name, or other measure of success, that big idea may just be round the corner.
In the meantime those who believe they have the "brains" should be capable of understanding that without the contribution of those who are more of a "doer", the world and indeed this forum would undoubtedly be a much poorer place.
