You're right, and I don't wish to play devil's advocate for the sake of it (no pun intended with sake!) - but I would presume that these guys were working out there when taken hostage. Therefore their companies would have paid for the flights out there, and the flights home.
If they were not taken hostage, would you expect the Japanese government to ferry them home for free?
