Re: Harry Potter banned in UK school!
I don't understand how they believe Harry Potter worships satan. You'd think it would be a good lesson for kids. Its about good verus evil and could probably teach kids in more understable terms about what is it to lead a good life under difficult circumstances.

It's fantasy, it's escapism, it's damned good story telling.

Well if I was a parent faced with the choice of that school or private education I'd keep them home and do home schooling.

Ah, but, from what I understand, their argument is that because witchcraft is *evil* and an abomination (and witchcraft is, of course, what HP does), then he is still demonstrating that you can get power from sorcery instead of from God and making it "attractive" to children.

Hmm...!!!
Read Terry Pratchett (especially books like "The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents" or "The Wee Free Men") and you'll see the difference between "Children's Books" and "Books Written *for* Children"!

Do you think that website presents a view of Christianity that you would be happy propogating? Is this sentence a standard Christian viewpoint?

What would, in your opinion, be the end result of millions of young people learning how to work with demon spirits by reading a book?

I'm guessing Russ didn't read the site properly because it is funny. We ain't laughing at christianity, we're laughing at the looney on that website believing that folk are learning proper spells from HP books and practicing magic.

Well they work for me
*Puts invisibility cloak on and disappears*
(That isn't to say I like Harry Potter, I don't, and apart from a few minutes here and there have managed to quite effectively avoid watching them )

Re: Harry Potter banned in UK school!
There have been a number of famous books banned from time to time. These include The Bible, Lord of the Rings, Huckelbury Finn, Tom Sawyer, Charlie and the Chocolate factory and not forgetting Noddy. Noddy books have been rewritten to rename the golliwog as a goblin and to take out phrases such as "Noddy was walking along the road feeling a little queer".

Did you see that prog on TV this evening about a new vicar in a remote parish in cornwall?
She visited a local museum for witchcraft to see what all the fuss was about and she was pleasantly surprised to find that witches were nothing to do with satan, two-horned devils, demonic worship etc and was not promoting anti-christianity.
Across the road from the museum was a christian bookshop run by a born again christian who sells a range of anti-witchcraft books.
I thought that was quite amusing and, including the link that graham provided, if anything it shows that some christians are quite capable of ridiculing themselves without any help from others. At least the vicar on the TV prog seemed more sensible about it.

Hello, Russ?! This is *Earth* calling...
Did you *READ* the subject line of this thread? Did you *notice* what it was talking about?
This whole thread is about *CHRISTIANS* who have banned Harry Potter books!! I just gave an example of the sort of nonsense that people are using to justify these sorts of actions.
And, anyway, surely these people aren't what you would call "True Christians" anyway?! Surely you don't *agree* with what they say on that site??

Re: Harry Potter banned in UK school!
I can see that site is meant to be funny - it's just when you're a Christian you tend to notice the digs people have been having against our faith on here lately a little bit more. As I said in another thread, I wonder how long I'd be able to get away with making such comments about non-believers for.
