She spotted it yesterday, just as she was about to give me a cheque for her keep. She has had to have her account blocked, borrowed £100 from me and now has to go through the long process of setting up a new account.

Re: Thieving T****rs
Something similar happened to my brother, someone drew £500 from his account and then someone else proceeded to make payments on other purchases on the internet using the same card details, a digital camera was one thing and a watch another. Both purchases were traced to locations in Glasgow, the £500 was withdrawn from somewhere in Manchester. My brother contacted the bank the account was frozen, they managed to stop both transactions that were made on the internet. This sort of sneaky crime sounds like its quite on the wide scale.

It is on a huge scale. It cost's us (as we pay in the end) billion's a year in theft.
Never use a cash point that has any form of card reader or swipe card reader on it. You should only ever enter the pin on the built in keypad.
One scam in london envolved a card reader and keypad next to the cashpoint with a notice " free competition - swipe your card and enter pin for a change to win £500.00 0 " sounds silly but they managed to get just over 1 million before they got spotted. The did not even have to go back for the reader as they used a pay as you talk mobile and a data card to send the info.
If it looks strange then report it to the card loss number on the back of your credit or debit card.

Still you have to feel sorry for people who fall for that...

Re: Thieving T****rs
These where three separate payments over 3 days, two to BT Pay by Phone Gateshead and one to Skyonline Livingston. I would guess that they have purchased mobiles or something similar and those are just the billing offices for the firms concerned.
She contacted the local police who would not even give her a crime number ( to much paperwork) Bt where very helpful and promised to try to trace the address the goods have been sent to, and Sky where useless and not interested.

I meant it seems to be one of a same operations that is on a wide scale and operates all over the place. I agree its on a huge scale and anyone of us can fall victim to it.

I hope that the bank is still not working on their old principle that you're guilty until proven innocent, that is they've taking her word for it without requiring proof beyond any reasonable doubt.

Re: Thieving T****rs
She should be able to get the money back iadom. That article says the banks are covering any customer losses.

Re: Thieving T****rs
She is with the Halifax and I believe they have set up an emergency account for her to use.

Re: Thieving T****rs
Another one to watch for is if you get a phone call, allegedly from your credit card company saying "My name is xxx, my badge number is this, my supervisor's name is..." etc and all sounding very professional and confidence building.
They they go on to tell you that they've seen an unusual pattern of usage on your card which may be fraudulent, so they want to check your details and ensure that they can stop it.
Of course it's total BS because *NO* card company would *ever* do this and if you fall for it you're going to find that five minutes later someone's used your card details to buy something expensive!

Re: Thieving T****rs
Seems like there is a lot of it going on round here. http://www.oldham-chronicle.co.uk/
I like the complacent reply from the Halifax spokesman, " he was aware of similar kinds of card fraud but he did not believe it was that common"
