He has done a lot of things to help technology, of course it's been in the money grabbing capitalist way, but the royal family can relate to that. 
He's deserves an honour even though he's exploits haven't been too honourable.

He's done more than most rich people to help others. Can't remember the figure but didn't he give hundreds of millions away to help something ?
I quite like Bill Gates to be honest, perhaps its because everyone else hates him and like using software that makes things harder rather than easier

the 26 billion thing is actually true as amazing as it may sound, he is a strong beliver helping the poorer people in the world and the serch for a AIDS cure. Although due to his Job he is an easy target for critism and a lot of people are saying that he des not deserve this but when you think about it it should have happened before (and not just because of the charaity stuff)
