Actually, in Spanish a noticeable tendency is to strengthen the insult with other accompanying words of emphasis. This is the case of gilipollas (prat, git), which is frequently strengthened as perfecto gilipollas (perfect prat/git), gilipollas integral (complete prat/git), gilipollas de mucho cuidado (a real prat/git), etc.
PS A question on a point of forum etiquette. To avoid a case of the dreaded asterisks, I have left DH as, well, DH. However can I take it that an expression that is acceptable to the Telegraph is unacceptable here, or was iadom merely being cautious?
