time for cd sales to fall again
the british phonographic industry, is spear heading an investigation in to how online retailers, are undercutting high street shops.
under UK law, CD's that are purchased from EU wholesalers, must be sold within the 'european economic area'
currently amazon.com is under investigation, for not complying with the rule although amazon.co.uk is NOT affected as the BPI states there CD's are from 'legal' sources.
the BPI has lawsuits already with CDWOW.com and PLAY.com
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.j...toryID=4087782
i cant believe they are doing this, and they wonder why CD sales are down, cost is part of it, and if i can get a cd for £8.99 instead of £15.99 ill get it cheaper its not as if they are tax evading are they

Re: time for cd sales to fall again
On some eastern island nation, piracy was rife.
You could buy a pirate CD for $2 while the genuine ones were sold for $10.
The music industry put some pressure on the government to do something to stamp out piracy.
So they made a law saying you can't charge more than $3 for a genuine CD
Piracy was wiped out instantly, but the music industry weren't too happy

Re: time for cd sales to fall again
I love CDWOW and I will be genuinely disappointed if the f*ckers close down this company. I have recieved absolutely excellent services for excellent prices. Well given the choice between £14.99 in HMV and free, I know what I'll go for You LOSE Mr British Phonographic Industry..... tw*ts!!!

Re: time for cd sales to fall again
i much prefer a cd in proper packaging that you know will play properly and sound good , its just that the prices they charge are stupid to say the least , the other thing is , how can the likes of asda generally undercut the likes of hmv , virgin etc , are asda buying there cd's on the blackmarket , i dont think so somehow

Re: time for cd sales to fall again
crappy singles should be scrapped.............all albums should be a fiver
I reckon the best way to do it is to make all albums dvds. Have on it material that would make people want to pay a tenner or fifteen quid...like concert footage , the making of the tunes, interviews with the band etc. On silly pop you could have dance moves

The simple answer is "right", it's a basic function of the laws of Supply and Demand as any economics student learns.
Of course the music industry's business model is still based on the concept that you can charge what you like and get away with it because that generates maximum revenue and people shouldn't copy your content because it's against the law. Unfortunately the name "Canute" springs to mind...

I agree, I refuse to pay over a fiver for a cd (album), hence the last time I bought a cd album was January 2003 when I had to pay £18 for Aphex Twin's Ambient works because I desperately wanted one of the tracks for a piece of coursework
Singles should cost 50p each
New films on DVD £10 falling to £5 after they have been out for a while.

im afraid pricing is not that easy to anticipate on goods such as cd's dvd's, the basic fundamentals on the structure is to create profit not a loss, having seen how the production of CD's and DVD's is done, i can say alot of work and time and production, goes in to them and somebody has to pay for that.
im not justifying the high cost, im saying your prices are not feasable.
i think a price of £8-10 per cd is acceptable, and £9-11 on DVD's obviously im not an accountant, but would have to look in to the cost involved with packaging as well.

Re: time for cd sales to fall again
Thinking back 20ish years when CD's first came out and Tomorrow's World presenters were happily spreading jam on the label side of them and proclaiming how amazing it was that they still worked.... weren't albums about £20?
Didn't the gov step in and say that it was an unjustified price and made them drop it down?
