banned words
scholars in michigan's lake superior state university, have compiled a list of words..........
its called 'the list of words banished from the queen's english for mis-use, over-use and general uselessness'
the list is compiled and 5,000 words were nominated for being overused innacurate or trendy over the past year(2003)........
here are a few
'metrosexual' made it to the top of the list - The term, which was coined by British journalist Mark Simpson, generally applies to straight men living in urban centres who feel comfortable indulging in feminine pursuits, such as extensive personal grooming.
bling bling - the term which emerged from hip hop culture that stands for flashy jewelry and other luxury goods.
shock and awe - the phrase Pentagon planners used to describe their strategy for invading Iraq.
LOL - the e-mail designation that means "laughing out loud," also has a place on the list.
Although it is meant to be funny, Shibley said the list also has a serious side. "We're trying to get people to slow down and think about what they say," he told The Associated Press.

i totally agree with the paragraph above, we should all use the english language to its potential, i fear that the next generation of people growing up, will be very much using there own terminology, in every day life........

Language, by it's very nature has to evolve to stay fresh, as fashions and times change, so must our culture and our language.
When was the last time you heard someone say "spiffing", "tardy" or "jolly japes" for example?
Just my $0.02

Re: banned words
Actually the beauty and richness of the English language has always been largely down to it being a living "Borg" like beast which reflects changes in society and assimilates the new into the old.
Just imagine if we were all to be required only to speak and write in the language of Shakespeare or Chaucer. Methinks the educators at Michigan's Lake Superior State University protest too much in this case.
Besides when were the Americans ever an authority on what is and is not good English, given the way they have done their level best to *******ise it over the years? LOL
EDIT: OK it appears a good old Anglo-Saxon word has been overused so much it gets trapped by the filters because it is so rarely used with its legitimate meaning, but some how "born-out-of-wedlock-ised" doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Tarnation! That means that I can't use one of my favourite political quotes, which I've been waiting for a suitable opportunity to slip into the conversation.
"The people have spoken. The b*****ds!", said by an American politician after losing an election.

True, but the corporate world for instance seems to invent new words just for the sake of it. There's a few words/phrase that I'd like to see banned here
Edit: Aargh, the swear filter also works on urls, even when you provide a text description. Try here Or just do a google on bull***t bingo, and pick the first one.

Totally with you there, I have them overusing those phrases at work. "Moving forward" comes near the top of my hate list.
Ooh, I can feel my hackles raising now!
