Exclamation Faulty speed trap on M4 (gwent)

Jct 24 - . Faulty speed trap claims innocent victims. Were you one? Appeal and have your convictions overturned. Have you been caught by the 'safety camera' that was in place from July 2002 until October 2003 on the M4 at Jct 24. Are you aware that this camera was incorrectly set to catch drivers who were 'legally increasing their pace up to the national motorway limit' after the roadworks. Innocent drivers have paid £150,000 in fines and had their licences endorsed. Were you one? Unbelievably, the 'Camera Partnership' states that it will not contact the drivers to inform them of their mistake. It there seems to be OK to extort money from motorists, cause them to have their licences endorsed and not have to rectify the situation. This is legalised fraud. Call Mid and South Wales Safety Camera Partnership. PO BOX 360 Cardiff, CF10 3ZR. phone 01443 743772 or 743776 So far only 10 people have appealed. All have had their convictions overturned. If you were convicted - appeal! Tell others! [Source of info: 'Motorcycle Rider' - Jan/Feb 2004 - Vol 4 No 13 - BMF]

'legally increasing their pace up to the national motorway limit'

What's that about, so can you increase your speed within a restricted area when you see a derestriction sign in the distance?

Can we see a link please.

Re: Faulty speed trap on M4 (gwent)

sounds interesting... I always get stick off her indoors when I stick to the limit after the end of the roadworks and just as you can see the derestricted sign a couple of hundred yards ahead.

Re: Faulty speed trap on M4 (gwent)

Just looked this up and it appears that the camera was located outside the reduced speed limit area and falsely caught drivers legally accelerating back up to 70 mph. (Link: http://www.abd.org.uk/pr/379.htm)

IMO its ridiculous that these cases haven't all been overturned automatically.

Re: Faulty speed trap on M4 (gwent)

it's all about red tape and lack of accountability and it's also all about money/revenue.

in my opinion it should be points only and no fines as the fines are the same regardless of income but the points system is fair for everyone and doesnt punish the lower paid more than the weathly car owners.

The camera was placed just after the national speed limit sign. However it was set to the speed limit through the roadworks!

I know because I got caught by it, drove by again, got the position of the camera and sucessfully told them where to go regarding the fine!

edit, I wish the police would NOT call them safety cameras, IMHO they cause more accidents than they prevent. People see these camera when they are not speeding and just slam on their anchors as they are not sure of the speed limit. This causes bunching and shunt accidents. I also know that there are fewer traffic cops on the road detecing real motoring offences than cameras that mean you keep your eye on the speedo rather than on the road!
