Told not to come in...
Right, had a heated discussion on the phone just now with one of my work colleagues.
Heres the story, I phoned up photoshop at Asda where I work to speak to our manager, found out she was not in. So i said to the girl I was speaking to, ok, so hows work, is it busy? She said that its dead and she had to phone another colleague to tell her not to come in because they are sending people home.
I said to her then, ahwell, at least they will get paid for doing nothing, she said no, the manager of the store said they will not be paid? Is this right?
I thought, if it is your contracted day to work and you are told not to come in or sent home, you should be paid for it, surely?

i would have thought so , but it would really depend on what you are contracted for , can you check your contract , assuming you have one

The only real answer to that is "check the small print in your contract".
If it says you're paid by the hours worked or when you come in, then, no, you won't get (or be entitled) to anything.

Re: Told not to come in...
It may be a clause in your contract especially as most finish with "The company reserves the right to amend this contract at any date etc."
Does seem unfair though...

Unless your contract states that they can alter your hours with no notice then they normally would have to get paid if they're told not to come in. My mrs. has been a retail manager for years and the only way they ever got round it was by having no set contracted hours for employee's.

i think that is what most supermarkets are doing, one has a set amount of hours per week but generally the workers 9although they may work set days of the week) are not necessarily always contracted hours, i.e. written down in your contract that you will work x day....
when i worked at sainsburys if we were called saying not to bother coming in, to get our pay we had to work a different day to make up our hours..otherwise we would be 'short timed'
i suggest you do as others have said and check your contract, and maybe even schedule a meeting with your manager or speak to your personnel department

Re: Told not to come in...
Personally I'd turn up for work and insist that if they want you to leave they have to pay you, oh, and get something in writing!
I would have thought that they wouldn't be able to change your hours without notice, that just seems wrong.
Which ASDA do you work at mate, I went to the Fosse Park one last night and it was reasonably busy, in fact prolly more busy than a normal Saturday night.
Saying that the CafÃÃâ€*’© bit was closed, but it was 8.00 so That may be normal 'cos I don't know what time they close normally.

Re: Told not to come in...
If you are paid hourly and not on salary, then they can tell you you are not required to come in or send you home and not pay you.

Re: Told not to come in...
I read these things up being an ASDA Empoyee myself and this is how it goes....
If you are in work for your Normal weekly contract they can 'ASK' you if you want to go home and if you turn down the offer its tough on them.
If you accept you lose pay from the point you walk out of the door and clock off.
If they phone you before your shift and tell you not to come in you can still demand to come in for your regular hours, if you turn down the whole shift you will not be payed a penny.
However if you are down for Overtime they can tell you to go home and you dont have a leg to stand on even if you need the money, same goes for if they phone you before your overtime shift, there is nothing you can do.
and since we get payed by the hour on a clock-in System, did you really think you would get payed after you had stopped working??
If you want to find out anymore LooeyB ask your People manager (or personal Manager if they havent americanised your store yet) and he/she can give you the details.
