Fireworks banned for under 18's

If you are like me and you hate nuisance fireworks then good news is here.
Posession and use of fireworks in a public place by anyone under 18 is now illegal. Also the fine for throwing fireworks in the street has been doubled to Ã‚Â£80.

Further laws are coming into power in 2004 such as a 120 decibel limit, banning sale and use of commercial display fireworks other than to licensed users, and I think local licensing of retail outlets (so that shops can be quickly banned if they sell fireworks illegally).

Fantastic, I heard this was coming into play on the radio a while back.
As someone who (you may remember from previous firework threads) likes taking part in small neighbourhood displays, this is fantastic.
I'm all for regulation of fireworks.
I think Ã‚Â£80 for throwing a firework is far too low though.
Perhaps having to spend community service helping those who have suffered injuries from fireworks.

Definitely restrict the noise of private fireworks.
There's nothing worse than letting off a multi firework only to have it screeching and banging extemely loudly!
The descriptions on fireworks are appaulingly inadequite when it comes to things like this.
I hate (really hate) screeching and screaming fireworks.
Give me ones that explode into a beautiful cascade of lights and colours with a pop rather than a boom anyday!

Ban private fireworks complete would be my preferred option. While I concede that there is some fun to be have from having your own little show, you're never going to have as good a show as an organised event.

One thing about general sales of fireworks that amuses me, if I wanted to buy a pile of explosive I'd probably be vetted quite thoroughly, whereas I can go down the local newsagent, buy a bunch of fireworks and get my hands on a pile of gunpowder for cash with no checks made. It's not the most powerful explosive these days, but if I were to empty out a few fireworks I could get enough together to build something fairly nasty.

While I am all for restrictions on private firework show decibel levels I am saddened by the ban on under 18's. I (and my friends) used to have great fun with fireworks when we were kids.

The point of a private party on bonfire night [or new year] is not to be as good as "organised" events as you call them. The point is to have a good get together and enjoy a smaller private fireworks display. My family events are fully "organised" and safe.

FYI I have been on several firework display safety courses over the last few years - not everyone who buys fireworks privately is some sort of nutter whose purpose in life is to blow other people up.

BTW, I thought they were already banned from sale to under 18's ?

It's the possesion and use of fireworks in the street by under 18's that have been banned

I'm not sure if 20 years ago fireworks that could take out phone boxes were easily available. To me that is the point, what was 'great fun', then & what seems to constitute 'great fun', now, are different animals

I wouldn't mind betting there will be a few go off tonight, as well as New Years Eve.

I agree with u, selling fireworks needs to be banned. Some went off round here on boxing day at about 10pm & they sounded like a very loud bomb exploding . They seems to get bloody louder each year
