Apparently America has its first confirmed case of BSE
SEE HERE
How will they cope, who will they blame?
Should be interesting.

Hmm yes, the shoe is now on the other foot.
Thousands of American comedians may now have to rewrite their material or face oblivion.
As we found out, it does not matter how much you tell the public that "beef is safe", most people will just stop buying it and eat something else. Why take even the slightest risk. Other counties will certainly ban importation of it (Japan has already done so).
Trouble was that in our case the beef was in fact not safe at all until they stopped feeding cattle with animal based food products and then killed off all the ones that had eaten such products. Even so, it took a while before people dipped their toe back into the water and started buying beef regularly again. We are constantly reminded of it even today as new cases of the human variant still crop up due to the long time it takes for the disease to make its way to the brain and the symptoms to appear.
If I was over there I wouldn't eat most american beef anyway. It's full of growth hormones unless otherwise stated (such a practice is banned in the UK and we do not import such beef).
I think people will wait to see if it is one isolated case but in the meantime any caution by the public and importing countries will cause their beef industry to suffer very badly. The government would do well to be as transparent as possible about it (unlike our government(s)).

A quote here from an American veterinarian (sp.)

If a BSE case were to occur in the U.S.A. it would be economically and politically devastating to the cattle industry.

I think you can rest assured there will be blind panic amongst some of the people.
I'll bet the lawyers are licking their lips already....

Nah, they'll blame the canadians - after all, they had BSE more recently than us, and they are a lot closer
I'm just gonna wait and see how they deal with it - I think we should start by banning all US beef - after all they did the same to use when we had it....

Yes but we won't do it back to them - after all we're just the world's doormat! Did we do anything to the French when they illegally banned british beef?

We already ban U.S. beef for other reasons.
We, and a few other countries, do not import US beef because most of it is from cattle that has been given growth hormones. We do not allow growth hormones to be used on animals destined for human consumption. Apparently the jury is sort of out on that in that their scientists say it is safe but ours remain unconvinced.
I mean, just look at Texans (the largest consumers of beef). Who needs more proof than that.

How right you were : Made in Canada

However, Canada's chief vetinarian said the US claims were premature.
Dr Brian Evans said: "It would be premature to draw such a conclusion at this time ... As yet, there is no definitive evidence that confirms that the BSE-infected cow originated in Canada."
