Toll roads nationwide......
transport secretary alistar darling is in favor of introducing tolls to every road nationwide the mirror reports that there could be a 1.6p charge per mile regardless of what type of road your on via a tracking system in-car
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3317197.stm
not suprising if the the M6 toll is sucessful i expect the government to 'trial' other systems such as this or other tolls

Re: Toll roads nationwide......
Well it would be a way of getting round the outrage at a large tax increase on fuel...

Re: Toll roads nationwide......
You know, I somtimes wonder why I pay road tax? I thought that covered using Britains roads. What's next? Pavement Tax?
Yes I can imagine it a few years down the line, everyone having to wear a tax disc.... and if you don't pay for one or renew it then its to the crusher you go.

Why doesn't Blair just change his name back to Thatcher already?

He can't do that, Maggie actually did things while in power (course if you're an old labour supporter you aren't likely to think any of them were good), Blair just seems to be interested in throwing money blindly at things and then use spin to make it look good.

I think only a quarter of what's raised via road, car, fuel etc taxes is actually spent on the roads system the rest goes to the NHS etc.
I think it's something like 20billion raised but only 5 spent on the roads.
if someone would like to find the exact figures then please do!

I already pay about 1.3p a mile - road tax is £130 and I do 10,000 miles per year ( and that calculation ignores the petrol tax I pay )
Typical money grabbing politician I say to you and your plan.

Too ruddy right. This is what the labour voters wanted and this is what the labour voters have done to us. Its getting more and more expensive to live over here now because labour just love giving our money away. Why in the hell should a country like ours for instance have to borrow £35 billion. All they have to do it stop wasting it

Re: Toll roads nationwide......
Blair is bound to have conservative ideas he was brought up in a conservative family. I doubt the toll roads will do anything to stop the high taxes on fuel instead they will just add the money to the taxes and waste more. Suppose limiting MPs expenses might be a big step in the right direction. £10,000 expensis for one year is a little OTT when most of those paying the taxes earn that or less in a year..
I feel this Toll Road is only the start, Blair will do more and fuel Taxes will go up as Road tax and what ever other back door tax he can find.

Err, you don't pay Road Tax. That was abolished after WWII. You pay Vehicle Excise Duty which is a tax on your ownership of a car.
It has nothing to do with "using the roads" as such (except that it's illegal to use a car on them if you haven't paid it), if it was about "using the roads" you'd be taxed on mileage.

I cannot understand why you have used 'except', its illegal to use a car on the roads without road tax or in your case V.E.D , I go back to my original statement 'Using the road'.

I thought 'road tax' was origionaly introduced to pay for parking. We were promised that all parking would be free because the 'road tax' money would pay for it. I (or rather, my father) could be mistaken on this though (it was a while back, after all)

It's even illegal to park on a road without it. A SORN won't do the car has to be off-road for that to apply.

call it what you want - the money is leaving our pockets
at an ever increasing rate
Blair and his regime make me vomit
as for "tough on crime - tough on the causes of crime"
when Blair's regime came to power
they had frozen all police recruitment
