Living on your own?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5232028.stm
Orangebird will love this one
As well as having to pay all the bills yourself if you choose to live on your own, the last paragraph makes it sound like there will be a new tax coming along shortly for those of us who choose to have our own space.
I guess there will be a tax break if you rent you spare room out to half a dozen, or am I being cynical to put 2 and 2 together and think a tax of this sort would be put in place to encourage single occupancy owners to rent rooms.
I guess a large tax on single occupancy home owners would sort out a few headaches for the government.

Re: Living on your own?
This is another thing that cant possibly happen in a civilised culture.Like the Fat tax that was mentioned a few weeks ago. I think if Blair would stop kissing Bush's ass then the country would save billions instantly. If any of these crazy ideas ever come to fruition I can see riots and civil unrest unseen in this country since the poll tax and miners strike.Blair will deffo be first up against the wall come the revolution

Re: Living on your own?
Oh great Makes a bit of a mockery of the coucnil tax discount for single occupancy.
More rubbish - attack that at source, encourage manufacturer's to minimise packaging, some stuff just has so much it's stupid. Remember we are in a consumer society. Our whole economy relies on selling more each year for growth, or is there to be a u turn on capitalism?
Improve energy efficiency - why have grants for insulation just for low income / got to be on benefits types, make them available to all. Those who have more money are less likley to be bothered with an upgrade, infact the average house from even the 1990s has inadequate loft insulation by modern guidance. Quick and cheap to deal with, but rarely done, due to apathy.

Re: Living on your own?
Well, they're make houses 'asian friendly'. Why don't they make some singleton friendly houses too?
Oh, sorry, my bad. If you're living on your own and working to afford the gadgets that waste all this energy, lets just tax the hell out of you instead, because frankly, you're not contributing enough already with your PAYE and NI anyway..

Re: Living on your own?
errm, All that has happened is that a couple of researchers have published a paper showing that single occupancy households use more space/energy (and this is particularly true of young(ish) males). These researchers make the ill thought-through suggestion of an occupancy tax (I think many of these single householders would love to live together with a partner). Nowhere does it state that such a tax is actually considered.

Well it does take a similar amount of packaging for a meal for one than a meal for two and a single duvet has nearly as much wrapping as a double etc.
