Postage price daylight robbery rises!! Must read info
Hi Everyone
The postal service has now released the cost rises due on the 21st August 2006 and they will affect a large amount of people.
The cost is now based on size and split into three sections, Letter, large letter and package.
The letter size is:
Length: 240mm max
Width: 165mm max
Thickness: 5mm max
Weight: 100g max
And covers such items as bills, small cards and post cards. The small letter size has a fixed cost of 32p (1st Class)
The next size is large letter, sizes:
Length: 353mm max
Width: 250mm max
Thickness: 25mm max
Weight: 750g max
This section covers A4 documents, CDs and DVDs in their cases, certificates, some large greeting cards with badges and most magazines will fall into the Large Letter format. This is the most damaging price rise for most people and business. Although there is a pricing structure based around size and weight differences, the basics are that if you wish to send any of the above it will cost more than one first class stamp and effectively two first class stamps (64p), that is unless you wish to queue up in the post office to pay for the correct postage for your A4 Letter or purchase a range of stamp denominations.
The final size is packet:
Length: over 353mm OR
Width: over 250mm OR
Thickness: over 25mm OR
Weight: over 750g
This section covers Gifts, clothes, shoes, posters, video tapes, large books and other large items and prices start at 84p, this will make parcels more expensive and for example you could send a pillow which weighed 220g but because it out side the size restrictions it would cost more than if you sent a house brick as it is smaller.
The other implantation of these new charges is the rise in in-correct postage being applied to envelopes, for example a Mrs Bloggs sends her daughter a birthday card, which is bigger that the small size with a badge on the card with one 1st class stamp on it, the card is then held by the post office as un-paid postage and the daughter goes to pick it up. Including the extra 21p Mrs Bloggs should have paid in un-paid postage the daughter is charged a standard £1.00 admin and handling fee by the Royal Mail.
The result of these charges increases are far and wide reaching, businesses will suffer increased costs, civil service organisations and members of the public will especially be hit by the cost increases. There are already complaints from businesses regards the increases
Totally appauling. Royal Mail need putting out of business now.
Just thought this might be of interest! For more info see the website links below:

Royal mail will soon be delivering letters in black and white stripy jumpers with “Swag†printed on their mail bags!!

Try sending them with someone else. Bet it will cost a whole lot more than 84p to send a packet.

Re: Postage price daylight robbery rises!! Must read info
before you all go on and on about this, try comparing the exisitng costs with the new costs.
The current price for a letter weighing 100g first class is 49p
The future cost for 100g assuming its small packet size will be 32p
How is that a rip off?
Learn to fold your letter and put it in a letter sized envelope

Same as with the new 'large letter' size - pop80 is making a massive assumption that people won't have the time or inclination to go to the post office and have their delivery weighed. If I had any qualms as to how much postage to put on, I'd either just wait until I could get to the post office, or get the post room at work to send it and give them the money

He's also forgetting that (in the past anyway) if a stamp has 1st printed on it, rather than a value, the Post Office have tended to honour it anyway.
As with Nugget, if I am sending an unusual size packet, or unusually heavy packet or letter, I will go into the post office anyway, precisely because I don't want to under or over pay.
As far as I can see, most prices will actually go down or stay the same.

Ok so you all work for the post office.
It does'nt matter then was just keeping people informed.
If you send out alot of A4 sized letters it will be more expensive though.
Some of us dont have the luxury of being able to send personal items through work though.
I appreciate though my views are not shared on this occassion, so if any mods which to delete this then thats fine.
Thanks

Point of order, but I would actually pay to send it through work

Buy an origami book and learn to fold your A4 letters into smaller envelopes and save yourself some money

Re: Postage price daylight robbery rises!! Must read info
We've just finished programming and testing a few thousand postal rate scale update chips that we sell at work. The changes were a bit of a pain in the **** to implement as the system had been changed so much but we managed it, even on scales that are 20 years old.

Re: Postage price daylight robbery rises!! Must read info
I send a fair number of larger sized items and some things will actually be cheaper under the new system.
However, what it will definitely do is increase queuing time at the local PO...

If I asked you to take a birthday card to my relative 250 miles away would you do that for 32p ? Course not. Get over it.
