The house in question is suitable for anyone, be they Muslims who care about such things, or non-Muslims who don't. As such, it is a complete non-issue - there's no favouritism, no racism, no positive discrimination

No prob, , some people may not like the layout but that is down to their taste

Re: Homes for the "asian community"
Why do some people keep justifying the mecca friendly toilets by saying that it opens up the interest int he houses to a wider market? They're housing association houses for goodness sakes, not private developments for full sale?!?!
And to comment on a point made earlier - council houses ARE for those that cannot afford to house themselves. I can't bloody get one.

In fairness OB, it's a valid point because, as housing association stock, they should also be made available to all potential tenants - as such, and as I said earlier, it makes more sense to make the house suitable for the widest possible range of people

But they're not - you still have to go through a scoring system. And believe me, as I've been there, if you're single and in gainful employment with no 'dependants', you've got more chance of winning the lottery than you have of getting a house. I applied to three different associations, when I was going to be homeless.

I suppose that the problem here is that, by the nature of limited housing stock, certain means-testing has to take place and, as much as many of us may not approve / find it unfavourable, certain groups are more of a priority than others.
Unfortunately, you've been stuck between the proverbial rock and hard place - your income isn't enough for a mortgage but, because you have that income, you're further down the list when it comes to the housing associations. FWIW, I think the situation stinks, but there have to be certain rules for things like this

I wish there was a rule that goes along the lines of 'the more you put in, the more you get out'. Sadly, it seems to be the enitre opposite.

Oh I agree - it hits home a bit more when it's someone you know as well. I've been lucky in that I've always been in a position where I could rent privately (absolute rip-off, by the way, but that's a different matter entirely).
On the flip-side, older brother Nug is, quite frankly, a scrounger who expects the state to pay for him and his ever-increasing brood. As a result, he has a 3 bedroom council house, whilst both myself and Twin Nug (and partners) have to work to pay the mortgage.

and when your days are flowing down towards the end of your life you can bet your bottom dollar that your house will be sold to cover your NHS (sorry that should be Social costs) in a nursing home and that you as a private payer will be subsidising your older brother if he is in a NHS(sorry I forgot its called social care so you can't get your medical needs met by the NHS) nursing home.
I'm seriously thinking that if I get to live longer than my husband, I shall sell my house, spend all the money on a round the universe holiday and then throw myself on the state when the money runs out.

You might want to visit a few state-run nursing homes before you make that decision...

Why would Coggy need to do that? What's to say that she'll need nursing?

Maybe but the fact is that those who are recieving 'private care' are paying more to subsidise those elderly who are in NHS nursing care. After paying taxes all your life and paying your own way why should you be paying through the nose again when you are at your most vulnerable?
Anyway this is off topic.

Ah yes, the ideal world... but you and I can only dream of it, whilst the idle poor just stay idle, and gripe about being poor... then they live longer, through not exactly pushing themselves too hard, whilst us hard workers just end up funding them for ever more...
