Motorway 'trailer' ads to be banned

And about time too - the whole country is turning into a scrapyard.

I agree I wonder how many accidents are caused through people reading an advert, and then wham into back of some other person reading the advert.

Kind of make a mockery of all those who say political correctness is stopping them from displaying their national pride...

Locally you are allowed to advertise by the roadside local/local charity events. It took 4 years of campagning by a council colleague to acheive this much, as the local church fete were having the small signs removed whereas six foot wide signs for Cornbury festival were allowed (just because they were not on the highway).

Guess I was right...but if this government think that this is the most important thing wrong with the country today then they're barking.

Sorry, but that's a little ridiculous IMO. People read road traffic signs, directions, police signs about wanting witnesses for accidents - what's the difference? Should they all be banned too?

Re: Motorway 'trailer' ads to be banned
I guess the difference is that warning signs, police announcements, etc... are all written to be as succint as possible - I remember that on July 7th, for example, the signs simply said "London Closed".
The trailers near us, however, are much more detailed and require longer time to read, ie you're distracted from keeping your eyes on what's in front of you. Also, the motorway signs are situated in a more convenient position than a lot of the trailers which are in a field to the side of the motorway instead of on an overhead display mounted above the carriageway.

Not in my experience - the police 'witness wanted' signs are ridiculously small print, and lots on them. Bad enough to cause another accident in the same spot IMO Where as trailer signs (quite a lot up the M6 I noticed this weekend) have the company name and an internet address usually, and that's it. If you think you're going to crash reading them, then don't read them - why do poeple insist on being so damn idiotic that the authorities HAVE to start wiping our backsides for us??!... It's morons like that who are inadvertently turning this country into a nanny state.

Not all motorway signs are positioned like that. The signs for most of the junctions on the M1 are by the side of the motorway, not overhead.
When they have banned this, what else are they going to ban? Any external decoration on vehicles (corporate logos on trucks for instance)?

Re: Motorway 'trailer' ads to be banned
Fair enough, I agree that the police witness ones are too small.
The trailer ones round our neck of the woods, however, aren't as well designed as yours. In particular, on the M5 there are some that are something to do with kitchen worktops... you'd have to be driving slowly to take all the info in. They're usually just a blur when I drive past 'em.

ps - I'm only for them being banned because they're such a f*cking eye-sore... they ruin the countryside (unless you choose to live in a city where you don't see trees anyway)
Maybe next they'll ban those little bumper stickers too.

Re: Motorway 'trailer' ads to be banned
Actually, thinking about this, the ban would mean things like Ling's Cars Chinese Nuclear Missile Truck would be banned too, so nah, let's keep it as it is.

They will have been lobbying to have it banned under the guise of road safety. Its a total red herring and its all about money. Ban it all or ban nothing. I drive all day every day of my working life. I've never had an accident in my life. Roadside ads mean nothing to me, I am too focussed on the job in hand, driving safely and not being a danger to anyone else. There are loads of things to distract the bad driver-roadside ads, nice cars and lorries, good looking girls/boys etc etc the list goes on. The good driver trains his brain and filters the crap out. Remember-its all about money-dont let anyone tell you otherwise.
