School worship rule to be relaxed
linky
I didn't go to school in the UK, but all I can say is: why only at 16? I actually went to a secondary school where religious studies were mandatory (but did not attend many lessons), and can sort of see the purpose of religious studies. Mandatory collective worship is beyond me though. I realise parents can withdraw their kids, but 16 seems a little late for kids to have their own say in this.

Re: School worship rule to be relaxed
It is about time, I was brought up Wiccan and to respect Pagan beliefs and was forced to sit and worship the Christian way at school, although I believe I should respect other religions and did, and listened to their beliefs it was a minor irritation.
Some other pupils I remember had to get a letter of their parents to excuse them from the lessons.

Re: School worship rule to be relaxed
If this IS to be the rule then 16 is the right age IMO.

Which would make sense as this is a Christian country?

I thought the following quote regarding age made good sense.
Quote:
|
"The church is quite happy to allow 14-year-olds to confirm their commitment to Christianity, yet it will not accept that other children of that age can feel equally certain that they don't believe."

I never said it did not did I Russ? so lower the tension
I clearly said I respected that it was taught at school but mentioned pupils who had other beliefs had to bring a note from their parents to be excused into the libary for the R.E lesson.
I never stated anything otherwise did I?

Not sure I said there was any tension - I was just suggesting why that was.

Re: School worship rule to be relaxed
I remember the stink it caused when a fellow pupil and I refused to bow our heads in fake worship.
When explaining to our form tutor that we did not believe, we were told it was a stupid view to have.
At least our RE teacher understood.
How can it be right that people in this country can be forced to participate in religious worship when they do not follow that religion?
16 is a start, but way too late.

Perhaps they are not but being as religion is an important factor in todays world I think they should be taught it, not many kids are into Mathematics and English and Science but they need to be taught that also.

Daily worship and Religious Education are two seperate things. One IMO should be mandatory, the other could be relaxed if deemed neccessary.
