Greyhound Racing
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article...7-2272307.html
As the owner of 4 retired racers, I felt it was only a matter of time before something like this would be revealed.
what do you think?

Re: Greyhound Racing
I'm surprised it's only made the news now......must have been a slow day for the news people (apart from Lebanon)..........I've known about this kind of thing happening for years....

I think we all knew about it, I for one have never really thought of the sheer numbers involved though, 10,000 by one man, how many more like him are there and for me the saddest thing is the fact it only costs £10 to do it.

Re: Greyhound Racing
We're only starting to care now because attitudes towards animals are changing - we're slowly affording them equal rights. Otherwise no one would be interested in the fate of greyhounds - or anything else fluffy/furry. As it says in the article - the guy's father dispatched unwanted dogs, so that's at least two generations.
They're lovely dogs - such a shame.

Re: Greyhound Racing
The laws need to be changed. It's not illegal to kill and animal as longs as it's done humanely without pain. Which, strictly speakig, is what this man is doing. This needs to be made illegal.

Maybe we could. A lot of people have a huge misconception about how much work greyhounds are as pets. Obviously, owning any type of dog is VERY serious commitment and should never be entered into lightly. But greyhounds must be one of the easiest dogs to deal with. They require maybe two or three 20 minute walks a day - not the 2 hour long sprints that some folk think. They also are very quiet dogs, not really prone to barking much. They're also very gentle animals and good with children, although no dog & child should be left alone unsupervised. www.greyhoundrescue.co.uk has loads of info if anyone is condsidering rehoming one of these gentle giants.\

...or make sure that everyone stops supporting this vile industry that uses intelligent, gentle animals as disposable money-earners.
It's well known that greyhound racing is completely corrupt to the core with race-fixing, so it's a waste of money betting on it anyway.

I don't bet on greyhound racing anyway. My suggestion was a good, honest response to the situation.
However before we go off on banning all sports involving animals and all the animal lovers get het up remember this. The animals in our lives are there because we choose to use them either as food or for work or for entertainment. If we stop using animals in response to the cruelty of a few and because of animal rights activators then what will happen to all the animals? If we have no need to use them in some way they won't survive.Look how many extinct species there are already due to man's not being able to domesticate them and their habitats disappearing because man can't or won't live with them?
I see your point about the industry being MADE to clean up it's act though.WE should make sure that every animal we keep or use is treated humanely and such practices should be abhorrent to all in the industry. After all why breed so many if they are not going to be used in the industry?

Re: Greyhound Racing
I think adoption is a great idea (look how many I have had!) but it's the industry that discards the dogs that needs curbing. Figures from within the rehoming arena indicate that around 30,000 dogs per year are disposed of!
that would mean more greyhounds than labs would be in homes in a year or two!

Re: Greyhound Racing
I see the RSPCA are trying to find ways to prosecute this chap, perhaps they should just phone the tax man.
