Council bans toy pigs from desks

Last month the Express & Star revealed how staff in the council's benefits department were told to remove a series of toy pigs sent as a promotion, as well as pig imagery, from their desks. It came after a complaint from a Muslim worker who said she was offended by the items - the Koran forbids Muslims from eating and touching pork.

Good old Express & Star - hard-hitting news as ever
In fairness, the Council have actually acted properly in taking action after a complaint. However, I have to say that the woman who complained sounds like a bit of a pillock - yep, the Koran forbids her from touching pork but a) it's not pork, and b) you haven't got to touch the things

Can't rep you yet, but great post Nug...
Cue certain members of CF coming along momentarily and saying its not actually political correctness but a figment of our collective imaginations...

Re: Council bans toy pigs from desks
It gets funnier/sadder - this is from an Aussie newpaper of last year.
"Piggy banks 'offend UK Muslims'"
http://www.theage.com.au/news/World/...006056771.html
I couldn't find anything in any UK papers, so I don't know how "made up" it is, but here is one from the BBC about the "3 little pigs" story being taken out of circulation.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2818809.stm
The thing that I find amusing about this (if it is true) is that the Jewish faith also finds pigs offensive, but we don't hear about Rabbi's rabble-rousing on Roshannah (try saying that fast)

If she takes the image to be representative of the real thing, isn't she guilty of idolatry? - isn't that contrary to her faith?

Exactly, isn't the council being anti-semetic by not acknowledging the pig related rules of other religions, thereby clearly showing that the council believes those other faiths to be of less importance than Islam?
Where do I complain?

Re: Council bans toy pigs from desks
These aren't real pigs though - they're either images, models or stuffed toys, so what's the problem?
There was me thinking April Fool's had come a little bit late this year. It's sad in this day and age that we have to go down the route of banning everything and anything just in case it'll offend other faiths/religions. Where will it end?

Re: Council bans toy pigs from desks
This is rather silly indeed IMO.
It's like I used to know someone and she would ban her child from drawing pigs at school too.
Pigs are only animals !
