Re: Council bans toy pigs from desks

One reason for, possibly, not eating pork is the trichinella worm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichinella_spiralis

maybe the question is, if it is still relevant in these days of freezers & microwaves, but 2000 years ago it was very relevant

The Council couldn't actually win in this situation - if they take action as they have, they're pilloried for 'PC gone mad'. If they hadn't taken any action, they'd likely have been accused of our old friend 'institutional racism'.
I disagree. I think that if they had merely said......ffs, it's only a plastic pig! The press would have been on their side......

Funnily enough, I was just discussing the dangers of undercooked pork with the wife the other day, and I said something about it being a possible reason why eating pork is not allowed in some religions. Her response was, what about chicken and salmonella then? I couldn't come up with more than: Good point, dunno

Potentially, you're right , but there's very few employers put there these days that would take that risk

Chicken used to be a 'luxury', when I were a lad, the Salmonella problem arose when people started keeping too many hens, too close together - in my opinion,

Re: Council bans toy pigs from desks

Lets remember this is one incident and not indicitive of muslims as a whole. Some people (i.e the BNP) love these stories because it kicks off another round of xenophobic " our country is under attack by islam" muslim bashing.

Funny these things. I think chicken (as we know it these days) is rather boring as meat (chicken breast in particular). But perhaps I have never tasted 'proper chicken'. I read a while ago that labourers in the USA some 100/200 years ago complained about being fed lobster every day. Apparently, it was poor man's food back then...

While what you say may be true it shouldn't detract from what actually seems to have happened.

oysters have also been considered 'poor mans' food, before now, here, my point is the risk associated with eating them seems to increase when it becomes commercial, rather than 'just' local

True. But when you look at what did happen it is not a great deal in the scheme of things is it? Is was a stupid choice by a stupid council after a stupid woman made a stupid complaint. All very stupid. No one was hurt, it was a pig on a desk. Lifes moves on.

Treat it as the act of idiotcy it is and move on IMO. Nothing to get angry or upset about.

Re: Council bans toy pigs from desks

sorry

http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.n...256DD7000B0AE8

Code:
Big Ted's dead , he was a great old pig
He'd eat most anything, never wore a wig
Now he's gone like snow on the water, good bye
He was getting old so the farmer said
"Sold him to the butcher just to make a little bread"
Now he's gone like snow on the water, don't cry
Ted may be a moo cow next time around
Giving sweet milk to the people in the town
He'll be whatever he will choose on air or sea or ground
The sows are busy with the piglets fine
I'd put them in the forest now if they were mine
cause I know they like acorns and I don't like bacon
Boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy
Squidly, squidly, squidly, squidly, squidly, squidly, squidly
Boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy
Sham sham sharoo, oh sham sham sharoo
Big Ted's sold and gone
He came into the kitchen while we were away
He took all the rice and he forgot to pay
He´s gone like snow on the water, good bye
He never cared to do the boogaloo dance
All he ever thought about was food and romance
And he's gone like snow on the water, good bye
Ted may be a moo cow next time around
Giving sweet milk to the people in the town
He'll be whatever he will choose on air or sea or ground
The sows are busy with the piglets fine
I'd put them in the forest now if they were mine
cause I know they like acorns and I don't like bacon
Boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy
Squidly, squidly, squidly, squidly, squidly, squidly, squidly
Boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy, boochy
Sham sham sharoo, oh sham sham sharoo
Big Ted's sold and gone

I have to disagree somewhat - in my opinion, it was the right choice made by a council that had to be seen to be doing something after receiving a complaint and, again in my opinion, they took the best action possible. However, I do agree that it was a stupid complaint made by a stupid woman

Re: Council bans toy pigs from desks

If I put up a poster of a topless woman (cut out from a national daily newspaper) on the wall next to my desk at work, and someone complains, I will be asked to remove it.

Religion is a secondary issue here. The point is that a co-worker took offence to an item on a desk, so it was removed. I agree it was a tough call, but really is it such a big deal for the sake of office harmony?
