Will there be any male teachers in 10 years?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/s...re/5176802.stm
In this day of "inappropriate behaviour" this vicar has had to quit because he kissed a young girl (on the head) in the school where he was a governor. He did so because he was congratulating her on achieving a maths problem which she had struggled with and he had been helping her....in the class with the teacher. He left on a good note and heard 5 days later that he was under investigation for inappropriate behaviour.
He is now left feeling absolutely paranoid about contact with other children and as a grandfather is horrified that this is how the world has become. At a playground with his grandchildren another child put out her arms to ask him to lift her as he had just done with his grandchild and he reeled back petrified of the consequences and was greatly saddened. I know this as he was interviewed on the radio today....
With this level of distrust about how are our children of tomorrow going to be? Will they lack some basic human interactions like touch and trust because they will trust no one?
What's this got to do with teachers? Well, teachers reside in a highly stressful, target driven environment where they are not allowed to touch a pupil. As this hysteria worsens which it will, will any men dare to teach for fear of retribution? Why men? Well I think women are generally more accepted around children than men...
Let me say I know there are dangerous, unsavoury characters out there that do necessitate us to be cautious but have we gone too far?

Who was it who made the complaint? Reading that article, it sounds like it was the childs mother, in which case I'd suggest that she needs a bit of a reality check

I wonder would the complainant taken it so far had the guy not been a vicar?
Anyway, I wouldn't be happy with an older male kissing my daughter on the head unless he was family or a close family friend, but I certainly would not make a complaint about him.

What he said, particularly bearing in mind it was in front of a room full of people...

It is a sign of custom for many people around the world, amazing people see a kiss as a sign of him being a pervert, yet hoodies are people who are just blending in, kids on street robbing are from bad parenting... you cannot make sense of this world at times

Well Summerhill http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Summerhill_School
has been defending it's policy of sharing affection between the children and staff members.I can't link to the story because it's gone past it's sell by date.
There's reference to the story here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel...thread=3113055
I'm surprised this school is still going frankly-shows that those of an independant mind can get around the one size fits all mentality of the Education Department.

Complete nonsense - the complaint should have been filed in the bin, but of course, common sense went out the window years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the mother now wants to sell her story and seek compensation for the "damage" caused. Madness .......

Yes. I've been banging on about it for a while, and how distorted media distorts our perception of risk. Even I find myself doing it.
On the other hand, a friend of mine (male, and incredibly good with children) has just been promoted from part time teaching assistant to teacher in his primary school. Round peg finds round hole.
