Breaking the law on religious grounds
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/5174260.stm
Is this another example of our laws being relaxed so as not to upset other religions?
Surley this law was brought in under the Health and Safety Act.
Interesting comments please.

Nope. The act pre-dates the health and safety act by several generations.

The 1930 Cremation Act prohibits the cremation of human remains anywhere except in a crematorium.

I personally see no logical reason (assuming precautions have been taken for fire safety) that humans need to be cremated in a cremetorium. Of course, the cremetorium takes a nice bundle of cash each time they cremate somebody, so that could be one reason for objection.

I agree the law should be upheld. In this case, I have no problem with the law being changed, provided that some basic rules are applied. After all, the modern crematorium is simply the sanitised equivalent of the funeral pyre, with an adjacent enclosed building to keep the weather out.

Re: Breaking the law on religious grounds
Regardless of their religion, they broke the law and it should be dealt with accordingly. However, I don't object to the law being changed in the future - although I have to be a bit of a NIMBY, I don't want my next door neighbours burning bodies in their garden... Definitely should be on appropriately licensed premises only.

I wouldn't like to be downwind of one of these arbitary funeral pyres !!!!
If this is allowed who knows who will end up on a funeral pyre ??

I don't think anyone is suggesting bonfires in the back garden...

I'd question the authority that the Police had to give someone permission to break the law... POlice aren't there to choose what laws count and what don't. They're paid to uphold ALL laws.

Oh, I agree with that, but in this instance I don't think you can blame the 'perpetrators'. They sought and got permission, so I'm not sure if they should be prosecuted.

Good point
I think Northumbria Police need a short sharp talking to.

This is the guy to contact:
Chief Superintendent Graham Pears of the Northumbria Police
Please, no jokes about "going pear shaped"...

Agreed. Parliament and the Courts are there to change the law (well, courts can't change it, but they can change the way it's interpreted). Police are just there to enforce it.

They would probably have spoken to the local CPS office and have been told that any charges they brought would have been dropped anyway.
If anyone complained about it then they would probably still charge the organisers who would then have any charges against them quietly dropped.

Re: Breaking the law on religious grounds
I watching an interview with the Hindu religious guy (forgive my ignorance but I have no idea of his title) who was basically saying that the UK's laws should change to allow all religious beliefs to overrule UK law.
So queue up here for honour killings, bigamy and female circumcision.
Funnily enough there was something else on a few days ago about how Hindu's were feeling left out as Muslims had been more vocal and broken some laws that they didn't agree with and now were getting (in their view) preferential treatment so were thinking about just doing what they wanted for funerals etc. and if they were charged playing the religion card.
Purely co-incidence I'm sure...
