We do not know if he was racist or not. He may have been looking for the results and skewed the study to show what he wanted to say.

We need more facts to know if he was racist or not. But publishing such sensitive research without stating were the details came from or stating that IQ is not linked to ability or intellgence directly means he should be fired for being bad at his job.

Who knows? Some of my lecturers used to produce all sorts of wierd and wonderful things to make their subjects more varied and interesting... But as has been pointed out, it's not unlikely that his students engaged him in a discussion which led to his comments.

Re the serious comment... please read the posts that I was responding to.

As for the first point, whether or not they were controversial is down to perception. For example, am I the only person who has picked up on the post about Asians scoring better in IQ tests than whites? And would that be any less controversial?

Here's a fact: black races produce better sprinters and better long-distance runners than white people. Oh, is that controversial? Or how about white races produce better snooker players than black races? Tell me, which one of those statements do you think would cause the most uproar?

Maybe, For all we know this may be true. If it is then it doesnt mean black people are not as smart as White people which would be stupid, it shows that IQ test may be flawed and culturely biased. In which case they need to be looked at again.

When I sat my IQ test many years ago, the testers went to great lengths to explain that IQ tests do not measure intelligence; they are supposed to measure how clearly you think.

For the people that seem hung up on the idea that this guy is an academic: He is/was a lecturer in Russian Literature. This hardly makes him an expert or even qualified to say something about the field of intelligence testing/psychometrics. The bloke is not (imo) speaking in his capacity as an academic. So the argument (implied in places) that his academic freedom of speech is curtailed doesn't quite wash with me.

Frankly, I really wonder why a lecturer in Russian Literature feels the need to come out with a statement over this.

Which just goes to demonstrate the cultural bias inherent within the tests. Different groups and communities may place a greater or lesser value (for whatever reason) on the types of skills needed to do well in psychometric intelligence tests.

And you tell me, just because one group may perform better or worse at something, does this necessarily mean it's because of their race? Can you think of any other factors that may be significant?
