Good for them. I just wouldn't say it's a 'shame' that kids today don't particularly appreciate PF. I think most of their stuff is ****e really. Wish you were here and Comfortably Numb are good. But the rest of it DOES sound liek they were all off their heads when they recorded it. Genius?

Have you ever heard of the saying "if you don't have anything nice to say then don't bother saying it" ??

I can see where you are coming from, OB, but, as far as I know he wasn't a 'junkie' in the usually accepted meaning of the word. Sure he took drugs, but no more than many, many other people were, at the time - mainly LSD. Unfortunately, he suffered a mental breakdown as a result.
- that isn't to condone why it happened, just to say that he became a victim, while others managed to survive. I look on it, in some way, as a similar scenario to George Best, who also became a victim of his lifestyle and then, unfortunately didn't really fulfil the potential that his genius was capable of.
One thing that impressed me on watching interviews with people who knew & worked with him, including the other members of Pink Floyd, was the incredible warmth & affection they expressed when speaking of him - including their tributes to the influence he continued to have on the bands music.

Re: Syd Barrett has passed away
Syd himself was mentally ill and i personally feel that even if he never took drugs they the same thing still would have happened to him
he was never a junkie just someone who took LSD and pot as part of the drug scene that was prevalent in the 60s
to say he had nothing to do with their latest hits sells his talent rather short.... he did form the band and write their first few singles.. if it wasn't for his playing and singing then they wouldn't even have had a record deal.. have you heard Roger's song from the first album ?
without Syd the band would have just drifted apart long before their success
without Syd and other's like him who pushed the boundaries of music and the guitar you would prob just be going out to a folk concert or jazz which is why i feel the younger generation should have an apperciation of music from generations past

well said
I can still remember back in '73 eagerly getting my copy of DSM, back then you waited pactiently for new releases, not like today where you've usually heard the whole album before it's even been released.
And I'm the proud owner of every album PF have ever made........

I wish I could say that
the days where me & my friends would sing along to 'bike' or 'corporal clegg' around the dansette, are long gone, but not forgotten

Re: [MERGED] Syd Barrett
I remember seeing Pink Floyd for the first time about 1968. When they played at the Portsmouth Guildhall. With the band Nice and Jimmy Hendrix. Then at the Wembley Arena in 1977. Brilliant. Rest in peace Syd Barrett.

Tragic loss as you say.
But regardless of whether you liked the band or person in general not as some in this thread don't and take pleasure at certain popular figures deaths it should not be ridiculed.
RIP Sid.

Re: [MERGED] Syd Barrett
As far as I can see, no one has ridiculed his death, or even taken pleasure in it.
I personally won't comment on Floyd's music at that time, as I wasn't alive, and my parents weren't really fans of Pink Floyd, so I haven't heard anything they did before the 70s. It would therefore be unfair of me to talk about the music, or any impact it may or may not have had.
A death, however, is always sad.
