R.I.P Harriet
Link: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/06...rwin_tortoise/
Quote:
A 176 year-old tortoise called Harriet, which some believe was one of three tortoises taken from the Galapagos Islands by Charles Darwin, has died in Australia.
...
Most recently, Darwin's possible buddy was living at Australia Zoo, where she was cared for by zoo owner Steve "crocodile hunter" Irwin.
A tearful Irwin told CNN: "She is possibly one of the oldest living creatures on the planet and her passing today is not only a great loss for the world but a very sad day for my family. She was a grand old lady."
Harriet died shortly after suffering a heart attack last Thursday.

Shame... at least she had a good innings.

Re: R.I.P Harriet
She was born around 1830, apparently - to put that into perspective, you wouldn't have been able to take a photo, because the first daguerreotype photo wasn't developed until 1839, but she could have been arrested, as Sir Robert Peel had established the Metropolitan Police in 1829.

Re: R.I.P Harriet
She was originally named Harry, after being misidentified as male for about a century.

Re: R.I.P Harriet
In mammals the number of heartbeats during the their lifetimes are remarkably constant. In other words, the faster the heartbeat the shorter the life span and vice versa. And before anyone pulls me up, yes, tortoises are not mammals!

Re: R.I.P Harriet
176?! If only they could talk, they'd have some stories to tell wouldn't they!
