Child mothers
I just heard on the radio news about a girl who is set to become Britain's youngest mum - she's 11 years old, nearly 12; the father is 15.
No I am not aware of the circumstances, but I am aware of the obvious, which is that two children have been having sex. One of them should be old enough to know better - old enough, but not necessarily mature enough. The other one should still be playing with Barbie Dolls, not having sex.
I wonder what is the best way to deal with this. Obviously the necessary support and care systems are all in place, but surely the best thing is to prevent it happening in the first place? And supporting the girl is one thing, but should the boy be punished? I think so. Until such people realise they cannot behave this way without feeling the effect, what is the incentive not to do it?
But this is all irrelevant. I cannot see any action being taken against the boy, or his supposedly responsible parents/guardians. Instead he has effectively ruined the childhood of another person, and the state ends up picking up the tab. Typical of this country.
Before anyone rants that I don't know all the facts... OK, I don't. But if what I am saying turns out to be completely wrong, I will retract it unreservedly. It will be intersting to see.
OK, rant over.

Re: Child mothers
Right, I dont know all the facts but I still think this is awful.
An 11 year old girl is only just starting to experience life herself and by becoming pregnant it is propulssing her into an adult world before she has even had the chance to live her childhood.
In my opinion, children should be playing outside, having a good time, and enjoying their life, not be out having sex.
This could even cause psychological problems later on in life, a painful birth, etc. Is she even fully developped to give birth.
I find it sad to think that their life is changed forever and that now she has all this to deal with.
There should be more done to stop this happening... but in this increasing world where you follow the media, try to act older than your age, and follow trends, it must be difficult to stay an innocent child.
I just hope she has people around her that can help her through this.

Don't know what to say, really, I don't think they will realise how much they will miss having their own childhood, until they are older &, of course, by then, it will be too late. Such a shame.

Re: Child mothers
I think that until guys are arrested and banged up for having sex with teenagers this thing will keep on happening.
This is a clear cut case, girl is 11, baby dna will prove that the guy slept with her while she was under age. Lock him up for 12 months, and see how many more guys will try their luck after that. Also anyone having a baby who is under the age of 15 should not be entitled to any benefits whatsoever.
This 11 year old's mumshould also be locked up! Can you tell I'm angry? too f********* right I am!!

mmm lock him up and then leave the baby (who incidentally, is completly blameless in this situation) without a father. not really fair. Saying that, i have no idea whether the father will support the mother anyway, but even if he wanted to, locking him up wouldn't give any opportunity.
Neither parents in this case are able to support the baby (neither being old enough to work, unless you count the fathers £10 a week he might get from his paperround). Therefore the government are forced to support this child. However, social services do assess the suitability of people for parenting and take babies who are at risk away (drug addicts are a prime example of people who have babies taken away). So should the baby be taken away from the parents on the grounds that they are unable to care for it? Then the baby ends up being adopted, or possibly living in a home for the whole of his/ her childhood. Again, not fair on the baby.
So what to do? Force the girl to have a termination? Not wishing to delve into that in too much detail as that is a whole other argument, but who has the right to decide that the termination should take place.
Maybe the mother/ father's parents are willing to support the parents and baby, but then if this is the case, should the parents adopt the child? Gets complicated doesn't it.
There are also many other consent issues that have to be considered- one example:
A friend of mine used to work in Claire's Accessories doing ear piercing. It was company policy that if the person was under 16 they needed parental permission to have the piercing done. A 15 year old girl came in, wanting her 12 month old's ears pierced. Under claire's policy, the 12month old's mother/ father had to give permission for the piercing. But the mother is under 16 so can't give consent.... what to do?
IMO a very complicated solution to which there is no apparent easy solution. An unfortunate circumstance to say the least, all very well saying that she shouldn't have got pregnant in the first place, but fact is that she did. So what do we do from here?

Re: Child mothers
I did contemplate a chastity belt for my daughter..but only for about 5 minutes.I then realised that there is no way to stop your child having sex even with all the discussions on being sensible that took place between us.In the end I decided to be pragmatic and bought her a HUGE box of condoms. In the end she decided to wait and in the meantime the box was put to good use persuading her friends to be a whole lot safer.
The problem is too many parents refuse to even think about their child being a sexual being and consequently fail to discuss the issue(unless it's a threatened if you get pregnant I'll kill you statement) in any coherent manner. You can't just trust to luck you must discuss it with the child and if the worst comes to the worst do something about it such as make sure your child has decent contraception or access to contraception.

About time this cause of action was taken, hope same happens to others, her mother should also be charged as it sounds as she knew all about it.
A little too late but it might start to make some young ones think.
