I`m only asking because i don`t know.
Anything the BBC produces is funded by the licence fee plus whatever funds are generated by sales. The NTL Family package costs 65p per day, go figure!

Hands up those who use this http://www.bbc.co.uk/

That's paid for by the licence and won't exist if the licence ever packs up...I find it and the BBC educational service very useful as an educator. If we ever have to start paying what it REALLY costs to access the educational programmes then us teachers have lost a valuable tool because we won't really be able to fund the other paid for resources.

But of course I'm just being selfish...

Auntie won't disappear for good, the website will just be paid for out of the adverts on TV.

I would like to know how much money Auntie would get through standardised advertising, like ITV... Would it be more or less? Watching movies without interruption is great, but if they can get a lot more money, then the service will improve all-round?

I think that if you introduce advertising to the BBC, then both BBC and ITV will have to fight for not much more money than ITV have now. There is a finite amount of money available for advertising in this country. Hence all the ITV mergers.

Have you seen the paid for commercial tv websites? They aren't a patch on the BBC site and they just don't have the scope and they are riddled with adverts and popups.

And as Stuart says they would be trying to chase the same few big advertisers.

At least at the moment there is one channel which is not infested with Financial ads or sodding ringtones ads.

My favourite idea is general taxation with all terrestrial channels getting a share, if they need to go over their alloted budget then adverts are available
They tried to charge people with digital services more about five years ago the problem was Sky, OnDigital and the cable providers refused to give them their customers details so everyone had to pay.
Also I thought the licence fee did cover other channels if they were making public intrest shows, I am sure Channel 4 gets a slice for instance.

Now let me see...£131.50 pounds spread over 365 days...oh dear that's terrible,36 pence is daylight robbery...Better not pay that...
I’ve been on and off viewing this forum for a few years now but after seeing yet more rubbish copied and pasted from the BBC website I’ve had to register because I’m sick of it and the people who expect others to believe it.

So here’s one the lowest NTL Digital package it £5.50 per month now that’s only £1.375 per week or 19p per day now that’s value and if you don’t wish to stay with NTL you can leave after 12 months and they wont keep sending people round after that threatening you.

The problem with the BBC is they keep growing and expect Joe public to keep on paying more and more. Scrap all the extra radio stations they have started and cut the TV stations down to 2 again cost would be something like £50 a year even though I’m for scrapping it all together in this multi station age

Or they'd be forced to produce programmes the viewer wants to watch which takes the advertiser to them

Who in there right mind would pay £100 million a year for a website unless you could fleece the public of course

Just wondering, With the new mobiles and handheld devices, do they also require a TV License to watch their programs?

Yes things could be changing though. The BBC has started broadcasting via the internet and wont of course admit the real reason for this
