Yes, that's how they latched onto me, although I don't recall seeing any such sign in Argos at the time. I think there is one now, though. Mind you, the parents recently bought a DVD/VCR combi, and I don't recall seeing such a sign in the store (can't remember which store it was now, and it wouldn't affect them anyway since they have a licence).

Too true. It's legalised theft, especially given the number of repeats.

Give false details then? Alternatively when I bought my DVD/VCR combi I wasn't asked.

Obviously use cash as well.

Re: TV licence fee to rise to £131.50

this is a tax that doesnt excempt people on low incomes.

and I bet this doesnt affect inflation so next month inflation will be reported at something stupid like 2% the government will be telling companies to keep wage rises low at 2% and all our taxes etc. are going up at much higher rates along with fuel costs.

Re: TV licence fee to rise to £131.50

The TV Licence is legalised robbery on behalf of the BBC. I hardly watch the BBC nowdays, I'm tuned into ITV1 and SKY. Even if the Government decided to abolish the Lecence fee we'd have a TV tax.

The only things i ever watch on BBC is the footie, and even then that can be got that on Sky Sports.
I dont even listen to their radio services.
Will they be issuing free Digi boxes to everyone when digital TV is compulsory?

They never supplied people's with free televisions to watch the crap the BBC churns out so I doubt they'll start handing out digiboxes either.

Brother's Keeper: Mark's discovery that Chrissie isn't his daughter leaves him battling with his inner demons. Jess's new-found determination is put to the test by possible child abuse. [AD,S]

9pm 9:00 pm

I agree their news service is great, as is thier webpage
But, the license fee is still unfair overall
They should scrap it and use adverts to generate revenue.

Hey, maybe we should all bring out a TV broadcasting service, have no ads' and demand people pay for it wether they watch it or not, would be a great way to make money. :P

Re: TV licence fee to rise to £131.50

BBC does do a lot, and it one of the biggest parts of our culture. No matter what changes the BBC is there and does it flawlessly.

Other than the excellent programs they have given us, including some of the best dramas and comedys ever made they offer a great news service. The BBC is respected as one of the best worldwide and its British! Any world wide notice or spread of our TV/News reputation is a great deal down to the BBC.

They also find and bring out a lot of incredible talent in the worlds of music, art and writing. Look at the amout of english writing, acting and production talent that started at the BBC that might have otherwise gone unspotted. When you do look around you do find just how much we owe, culturely to the BBC.

The BBC is far more than simple TV channel. It is a key driving force behind our culture, it gives us a good reputation outside of the country in the fields of Drama, Comedy and News. BBC News, I belive, is still the most widelt respected and known news companys in the world.

The BBC is a key part of us as a country and removing it will be such a massive blow to our culture and our reputation. Imagine the BBC being a commerical company! No more BBC.com, no more investing money in new, risky, tv shows, no more worldwide news service.

We cannot let one of the few institutions that set us apart, that give as a lot of our culture to die to commercialism

Says someone who has 'The Office' in their avatar. The Office won awards in America, it got re-made for a American audience. It was loved on both sides of the alantic.

It never would have happened without the BBC. Far too risky for a commerical company to take on.

It introduced and dicovered Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

It made a actor and a career for them and also its actors one of which was then offered a role in a big movie. BBC again.

Well everyone reckons sky prices would go through the errr....sky if they didn't have advertising.

I'd like an opportunity to find out how much more expensive it could get WITHOUT advertising.

Then we would see people bleat...

Well said Damien, the licence fee should give the BBC the power to be impartial and innovative.

Re: TV licence fee to rise to £131.50

the news service is diabolical heavily biased. What makes it scary is so many people incorrectly see the bbc news as highly unbiased and reliable and take it in with higher regard then other news media.

As for quality of the programs that is personal choice, the problem is paying for the bbc isnt personal choice.

the government has even reclassified the bbc now as a central government department.

I want the right to choose wether or not i want to get BBC, just like choosing if i want sky sports or not.
I pay for the family pack on NTL and get lots of channels full of good drama films and news for about £30 a month, so £11 a month just for the BBC is a bit OTT.
Just my opinion of course
